From an interview by Dan Patrick in the March 4th, 2010 Sports Illustrated:

DP: It seems like [San Antonio coach Gregg] Popovich is at his best this time of the year, when we're getting near the postseason. Is that the team you see in your rearview mirror and worry about?

    PJ: Without a doubt.

He also mentions Dallas and Denver as teams to watch.

The Spurs know the Lakers and their M.O. better than any other team in the league. Not a surprise. We're making a run without Parker, and if he comes back rested we could definitely be a scary team to play.

Think: Would it really be that shocking if the Spurs went to the WCF or even the Finals this year? Yeah, it would be surprising, but with this veteran laden team, not more so than some of the recent playoff runs by teams.

Nothing that godsend of Lady Luck says is to be taken seriously. Just can't wait for him to end up coaching a team with both LeBron and Dwight Howard in the year 2015.

When he was worried in the past he would usually say the opposite. Hard to put much stock in What he says. He's just trying to motivate his team.

Say the Lakers play the Spurs in the 1st round and beat them in 6 games, play Denver in the 2nd rd and beat them in 7 games, play Dallas in the WCF. That is a tough road of teams to have to go through after having won it all the previous year. They may have enough talent to get to the WCF but if they aren't playing at a high level at that point, even if they beat Dallas if the Cavaliers are waiting for them with home court advantage in the NBA finals all the wear and tear of going to the NBA finals twice once in 2008 losing to Boston and in 2009 beating Orlando, might just catch up to them a third straight time. You can already see signs of it in their play recently, they might feel fine physically but mentally there are teams that will be hungrier than them these upcoming playoffs.

Judging by the way the lakers celebrated after beating the spurs a few days ago---I believe him...

the lakers do NOT want the spurs in the first round

Thatīs a lie, they would have beat OKC and Portland if they were looking for another matchup. And even rest some of their players (ie not play Kobe and the other 3 starters 42+ minutes) if this were true.

gasol really s our offense since they don't have to double timmy, and now we don't have bowen to shut down kobe.

we never could? it was never about stopping kobe but rather all the other crap around him. to our defense they have no way of stopping a healthy parker and ginobili

Yes, especially when you consider how much unclutch role players we have on the team(Bonner, Mason, Bogans). None of those three have EVER come through in a playoff series.

I think Timmy did a pretty good job against him in 2008, Manu was just too injuried by then.
Plus, i think last game was an exception and not the rule.

So they are losing games on purpose?
Not sure by they rested a lot against OKC, trailed by 33 at the end of the 3rd... thatīs very strange for a team like LA for sure.

All the starters rested the 4th quarter of course.

Last time against the lakers , Spurs got a great bunch of looks from the perimeter all game. Not sure what's the reason, could be the laker's mistique but the Spurs shrivel against them often . From getting sloppy in the 4th to Spurs shooters missing wide open shots, mentally they give up. If the shooters hit from outide it chages the whole complexion of the game. If they are the first round opppnent im not as worried as many here. I can see why Phil feels the same. You gotta beat the best to be the best.

The health of the big three and how quickly Tony gets back into form being the most important factors.

That's not Phil saying it. It's Patty saying it and Phil doing what he does and just agreeing to get the interview over. If Patty had asked the question right instead of leading to a yes answer then it might mean a little something.

Agree. Since the Gasol trade the Lakers have had no problems with the Spurs.

It would be 5 games max against San Antonio in the playoffs.
