If we don't pick a perimeter player with our first and he is available with our 2nd pick, he would be a really good option IMO.

What a game for Butler today, 21 points 10 rebounds 13 free throws, not a great shooting day but hits the GW in overtime.
28 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 4-9 3Pts, and 12-13 FTs
I think his stock will rise to maybe a first round pick if he can play well for the rest of the NCAA Tourney. After Pondexter I like this guy better then Anderson.
next game we will have the directly comparison between Butler and Pondexter. will be a great (and the game deciding) match up.
Butler was fantastic till now, will be interesting how he does against a much quicker and more athletic defender like Pondexter.
overall I agree he is a nice option for the 2nd round pick, pick considering the Spurs need more of an athlete for that position, I'm not sure. but if he could play the combo role at the next level, maybe like Ryan Gomes, he could find his niche.
I think Butler would be nice... hes very versatile... especially if he can somehow fall to us with our 2nd pick or something... the mock drafts don't have him very high... everyone will see what he can do though once the final four starts.. this guy can flat out ball.

It was really a shame for Butler that he suffered a torn ACL last night. As a WVU fan, it really sucks to see his draft status plummet like this.
He's now projected as second round to undrafted, from what I've seen.
On the good side for the Spurs, maybe they can pick up a steal late in the second round like they did with Blair, Ginobili, ect.

I don't know if a team would be willing to burn a late-late second rounder on him (like last 5 pick). He is a borderline lotto swingman.
He'll just have to take a year off to rehab. Hopefully he'll be drafted. Otherwise he should be able to sign a contract as an undrafted.
Actually, as a CBA question, it could get interesting. Could a team draft Butler in the 2nd, offer him a minimum contract, and then apply for a disabled player exception; effectively allowing them to keep their draft pick without cap/player slot (remember you can only have 15 signed) consequences...(note, the team would still have to pay him, but it wouldn't count for salary cap calculations.)
If thats the case I'd draft him in a heartbeat at 49 and sit on him for a year. There are a few players that might be there at 49 that I'd probably take first, but sitting on Butler for a year isn't a bad prospect based on what little you'd be giving up to get him. Especially if he can be the roster's 16th man.
if a team doesn't plan to immediately bring in their 2nd round pick, wouldn't it be that much easier to pick and stash?
the major question will be, who the Spurs pick in the 1st round anyhow. if it's a SF, as most expect, Butler makes even less sense.
this draft might not offer much star power, but right now it looks pretty deep. so the #49 pick could be good enough for a decent bench player.
players like Miroslav Raduljica, Sherron Collins, Jerome Jordan, Art Parakhouski, Sylven Landesberg (and some more) could still be on the board. each one looks more intriguing for me than Butler.
Certainly a Euro pick and stash would be an obvious method of not bringing the player in immediately. However, at pick 50, it would likely offer significantly less talent than Butler. Butler would be a late 1st round pick, except for his injury, which likely wipes out his first year...
No. He's got to be under contract when the injury occurs.

At this point, haven't been hearing much about him; if he goes undrafted, I think it's certainly worth giving his agent a call. For that matter, I think he's good enough to take a gamble on at the 49th pick.
If Butler is available in the second round, the Spurs shouldn't even hesitate to take him. It'll be another Blair-like steal.
a 2nd rounder would be worth the risk imo.

How difficult would it be to snatch up an extra late 2nd rounder and sign the guy? Seriously, how much value can the 56th pick have this year?
He already had lateral quickness problems before the ACL injury. It's a sad story, but I don't think Butler will ever make it in the NBA. Before the injury he was probably going to be a late 1st rnd or early 2nd rnd pick. Now he will likely go undrafted.

Butler says he will have to sit out the summer league only. He expects to be ready for the start of training camp and be able to undertake a full workload. Teams heard that a lot in Chicago, just as they will hear it next week in scheduled visits with the Spurs, Clippers, Trail Blazers, Thunder and maybe the Pacers.
I think somebody will risk a 2nd rounder on him. Would easily be a top 15 pick if injury didn't happen.
