Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, who is set to become the new owner of the New Jersey Nets, pledged during his recent 60 Minutes interview to make a splash upon his arrival. News broke this morning that Prokhorov's pledge will blow the doors of anything anyone could have expected.

According to NorthJersey.com, Prokhorov will extend Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski an offer "that would be difficult to refuse". The exact numbers? Prokhorov says he will extend Coach K an offer between $12 million and $15 million per season. The offer is nearly double what Coach K turned down from the Lakers in 2004, when the Lakers offered Krzyzewski a five-year, $40 million deal.

This time around, the owner is a man who does not take "no" for an answer and may put out a deal that makes Krzyzewski not only the new head coach in New Jersey but the general manager as well.

Prokhorov's pending ownership of the Nets should be approved when the NBA Board of Governors convenes on April 16th.

The first reports of Prokhorov reaching about to Coach K came in February, but then the Duke head coach was blunt in his response.

“No one’s contacted me,” Krzyzewski said at the time. “If they do, I think ‘nyet’ would be easy for me to say.”

Nets interim head coach Kiki Vandeweghe is not anticipated to return and Prokhorov wants lock up a big name to lead a young, learning roster. If Coach K says no, reports are that the Nets will pursue Jeff Van Gundy, Avery Johnson, Villanova head coach Jay Wright and possibly Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.

    WTF?!?! That's ridiculous.

I think the average NBA head coaching salary is somewhere between $3-4 million a year.

sons I think the real question is would $15 million a year be enough to force him to live in New Jersey? Coach K is already filthy rich and a legend in college with nothing to prove. leaving beautiful NC for well ... New Jersey would be hard. then again who knows, the deal may include a cameo on "Jersey Shore"

South Jersey is not bad. However, it might not matter. The team is moving to Brooklyn soon enough, even sooner if they land a Lebron in the offseason.

Life isn't only about money. Coach K will do what makes him happy. If it's the Nets so be it. Success in college does not mean success in the pros.

    See Rick Pitino.

If he wanted to coach in the pros, he should have done it a loooong time ago. He's not going to bite this gig

sons plus he has the luxury of controlling rich white kids at Duke ... why would he want to go to the NBA and deal with the "know it all / can't be told anything" brotha's? lets just be real about it.

Every competetive person has that fire in him to prove he can be better at his craft. For that reason alone, I think Coach K would consider taking this job. But I agree with BR. In terms of position, status and respect, Coach K is better off staying in college than dealing with NBA players who would cuss you out if you dont give them playing time.

Thats why I hate how the system works. In college, athletes really are not playing just for money. They are playing for their reputation and for their hometown. In the NBA, everything becomes black and white. All about howthe money.

Maybe when Coach K turns him down, Prokhorov will go after UConn's Geno Auriemma. He could get those ladies going.

ESPN.com reports that Coach K 'wouldn't have any interest' in the position.

This offer isn't true. This is merely a recycled rumour. Prokhorov and Thornton have already said multiple times no decisions will be made until the ownership deal is formally approved by the NBA. Everything you're hearing now is pure speculation.

The Nets won't be playing in New Jersey next season any more but in a very nice arena in Newark. And c'mon, what's the distance from Newark to Manhatan? 15 miles or so?

Yeah, the guys who are going to be economists or teachers after the college. If you think the guys who are going to play in the NBA aren't playing for their draft position, ergo their future earnings, you need to wake up.

Newark is in New Jersey. Furthermore, Prudential Center (the arena they're switching to starting next season) is 7 miles away from Continental arena (the arena they've been on up to now).

That said, I expect them to move to the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn within the next 2 years.
