The Manu Ginobili free agent conversation, so far
    by Timothy Varner

Back on March 11, I suggested that Manu Ginobili’s recent strong play would have the effect of complicating his upcoming contract negotiations with the San Antonio Spurs. Quoting myself:

My gut says he stays. It sure would be hard to see him play in any other Jersey.

Great piece, specially the Manu / Joe Johnson comparisson. I can't understand how Spurs fans that should be able to understand Manu's greatness a little bit better than the average NBA fan can think that JJ > Manu.

Manu is better than Johnson in almost every possible way.

Take it for what itīs worth. As of today there a story about a reunion between Manu and Hernandez (Argentina NT Coach) in OLE sports newspaper states that Manu is most likely NOT PLAYING in Turkey this year.
The article states basically, that he really wants to play, but feels itīs just not the right time to do it with their twins scheduled to be only 1 month old by the tournament start. Coach says that he spoke to him and told him he understands as he also has twins, and is such a hard work on the mother to be left alone.
Manu is just postponing the "No", but the article state that is almost a made desition.

I'm sure this answer has been posted before so forgive my ignorance. Aside from both sides wanting to play things out, can the team and Manu agree to an extension tomorrow if they wanted or is there a certain time to get things like this done?

An extension can be signed from now until June 30th. On July 1st, Manu becomes an unrestricted free agent.

There is no way he signed before July 1st, so there is no point in talking about that. This is his only chance at unrestricted free agency, so the market will be tested. If he leaves and the Spurs don't get any compensation for him, the rebuilding begins.

I hope he stays, but there is a significant risk in signing him for fours years and then not seeing the March 2010 Manu on a regular basis. Because he is the possibly the most popular player to ever play here (yes even more popular than Timmy, Ice, or Big Dave), the FO may want to take the risk. Without him, there will be backlash by season ticket holders and fans.

    Stay with the twins, Manu.

    You've given enough to basketball.

    Keep some for yourself.

    First born is very special.

Maybe Holt wants to see how far into the playoffs the team can get before committing to a Manu contract. If Manu is playing this way and the rest of the guys are healthy and we still don't make the finals, he might just cut bait.
I seem to remember that they needed at least X home playoff games to get back the extra investment of RJ this year. Don't remember where this was.
Of course, it is a risky strategy, but you have the time and everyone already knows Manu is worth a lot.
Manu, if you can help the team make some noise, Holt steps up and offers the dough.
