PHOENIX - Tim Duncan has officially notified USA Basketball that he will not be a part of the U.S. team that will compete at this year’s world championships and the 2008 Olympics.

After the Spurs’ 91-86 loss to the Suns on Saturday night, Duncan confirmed his feelings on playing for the U.S. team.

“I have no interest in that,” he said.






I don't think he has ever played for his us virgin island team. That said I think he would have liked to win a gold medal in the olympics. Just one reason he isn't as good as David Robinson. I think tim got a bad experience when he lost. While manu would play for his country even if it wasn't the best situation

Tim was part of USA Basketball from 1998-2004. He did more than his part and then stepped away. Nothing you posted contradicts that. Tim supported his NT for an extended period of time. To say Tim has demonstrated a lack of support for his NT simply ignores the facts.

Tim Duncan, unlike the majority of the '03 team who played in Puerto Rico (IIRC), actually honored his commitment and didn't come up with some weak sauce excuse to avoid playing in the '04 Olympics.

His reward, a terribly constructed team and the scorn of the majority of fans and writers for his teammates at udes and their on-court results.

That bandwagon comes on goes every year. This NT love is a cultural thing, you can't fight Manu's culture so, adapt to it.

Yeah, Im glad Manu is a "Spur for Life" now and his number will be retired. I agree with the poster above, I don't like the national team stuff but Manu is Manu, he brings the fire and thats just the way he is. If he got bad hurt playing for his national team that would suck big time, but for him he just has to do it.

yep... that pretty much seals it... I think the only way he may reconsider his position if it's the Spurs win it all and he delivers Finals MVP kind of performance

I might be thinking of Buck Harvey, but was Harris the same idiot who thought Manu didn't deserve to wear Avery's #6 jersey when he was first drafted?

Based on this interview, I would put Manu's chances of playing for the national team like this:

2010: 5%
2011: 35% (though this wasn't mentioned, probably up to 65% if the CBA looks very shaky going into the summer)
2012: 90%

That means the Spurs probably get two out of three years of the extension with Manu being fresh coming out of summer. As for that third year, we'll see a lot of anti-NT sentiment on this board and elsewhere in the summer of 2012, with Spurs fans crossing their fingers that their $14 million man doesn't get hurt. It'll also be interesting to see where Manu's game is when summer 2012 comes around; it's possible he won't be the star of the Argentinian team, but I'm sure he'd still love to go as a role player.
