todays game was great, all about D, like the old times
Unreal. If you had told me the Spurs would have gone 0-7 from 3 point range and the Mavs would knock down 8 of them, I would have never believed we would win the game.

That's because Pop finally woke the up
San Antonio became just the fourth team since 2000 to win a playoff game without making a 3-pointer.
Friday Spurs 1st round 0-7
April 26, 2008 Jazz 1st round 0-14

Looking up those games...
April 26, 2008 Jazz-Rockets, the Rockets hit 7 three pointers (7/22).
April 27, 2006 Nuggets-Clippers, the Clippers hit 5 threes (5/14).
May 8, 2001 Lakers-Kings, the Kings hit 4 threes (4/14).
Doesn't really answer the le of the thread, but it's close.
Happened at least once before (in the playoffs).
The only one I could find:
April 23, 1992
http://www.basketball-reference.com/...204230BOS.html
Indiana Pacers 113 -- 8-17 3p attempts
Boston Celtics 124 -- 0-1 3p attempts
I just saw on NBATV.....
1st Spurs team to win a Playoff game without making a 3 pointer since May 15, 1993 against the Phoenix Suns.
If you'd told me the Spurs were only going to attempt seven three pointers, I'd tell you they stood an excellent chance of winning any game, regardless of how many of those threes went in.
This. The Spurs owned the paint last night.
The danger of shooting lots of 3's against a team like the Mavs is that misses often end up creating long rebounds, which in turn can lead to fast break opportunities, and that's how the Mavs like to score.
17-0 run given up to the Mavs in the 3rd qtr.
Is that a record in a win?
Shoot is that a record in a Spurs playoff loss?
1. Finley was gone.
2. Hill can only shoot corner 3s.
3. RJ can not shoot 3s anymore.
4. Bonner is too busy defending Dirk.
5. Bogans and Mason don't have much time on the court.
Yeah - that's why I'm glad the Spurs didn't continue chucking up 3's when they weren't falling.
Those of you who are really into stats and analysis - how many points did the Mavs score off those 7 missed 3's?
San Antonio became just the fourth team since 2000 to win a playoff game without draining a single 3-pointer.
It's nice to see Spurs not shooting 3's all day even if they are missing, I remember at times earlier in the when Spurs went 2-22 in a game because they kept jacking up 3 points even thought they were all not falling.
Spurs will still need to have some consistency from the 3-point line at some point though..Bonner in particular, he needs to show up in this series..
It looks like he's hesitating to jack up a 3 and he is driving to the rim.
The key is not that they didn't hit one; it was that the three wasn't a focal point of the offense. It was pound it inside old-school style. They can't win them all that way, but it was nice to see that they don't have to live/die by the three.
Exactly. You don't have to shoot a single three pointer if the opponent is letting you score in the paint the whole game. When a team shoots a lot of three pointers it's usually because they are settling for three pointers instead of working for a better shot and breaking down the defense. The three is supposed to be punishment for sagging to help defend nearer the basket, pure and simple.
For what it's worth, the Spurs were 13-4 (.765) this season when they shot fewer than 15 three-pointers, and 37-28 (.569) when they shot 15 or more three-pointers.
Looking at the play-by-play, the Mavs scored 8 points following a Spurs 3-point attempt, making two-pointers on 4 of 6 possessions (Spurs got an offensive rebound off of one of the attempts). However, the fastest of these possessions was 11 seconds long, so the Spurs weren't giving up fast breaks per se.
hit ZERO 3's, shot under 50%, got outrebounded big time, but still won.
theres an anomaly for you.
Shooting 48.7% isn't bad, especially considering the Mavs shot 44.7%.
And the final rebounding tally was 36 to 36.
Yep, I remember watching the Mavs up here when Motta tried the "win by the three pointer" experiment, and that was when the three point line was closer. It was not a success.
