On the Ticket this morning they were dismissing how hard it was for a team to come back and win 3 straight games by saying that most of the time, the team that is down is an inferior team. I agree with this point. But then they went on to say that the Mavs chances were significantly better to complete the comeback because they were obviously the better team on paper. Heard the same thing before the series started about Mavs clearly having more talent. I'm biased but how can anyone objectively say that Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Butler, Haywood, and Marion are clearly better than Duncan, Parker, Manu, Hill, Jefferson, and the bench. Not to mention the coaches. I guess you can make a point that it's pretty even but to say the Mavs are clearly better?????

Mavs are clearly the more talented squad. But the Spurs are just very well built, and have the big 3 who have played together for such a long time. If the Mavs had the same core together (Dirk, Kidd, Caron) for 5+ years, this series would have been over in 5.

Mavs are deeper for sure. I agree with the OP that they aren't much (if any) more talented if you only consider the players he named, but Dampier and Barea are real contibutors, and Beaubois and Stevenson could be too if they got more PT.

I like how you used clearly like there's such an incredible gap between the talent on both teams.

Dirk, Kidd, Butler together for 5+ years would never achieve 3 championships.

Even if they were together for 5 plus years those 3 are not better than Duncan, Parker, Ginobili.

From 1-7 in the rotation I'd give the Spurs the slight edge However from 7-12 I'd give the edge to the Mavs. Mavs have more versatile and talented depth, but that's irrelevant in the playoffs when teams usually play only 7-9 guys.

3 of the 4 most talented players (as of right now) in this series are wearing silver and black.

There is no clarity at all in the Mavs being "better on paper".

the mavs were better on paper than the 2006 Heat, the 2007 Warriors and pretty much every time they lost in the playoffs for the last 10+ years.

if the mavs were not better on paper than Spurs in 2006 then there is no way in they are better on paper now.

back then we were giving minutes to Nick Van Exel, Beno Udrih and Jaque Vaughn

    That's actually not an answer.

A yes or no will suffice

I was surprised at how many scrubs the Spurs were able to trot out in garbage time Tuesday night. There were entire 2nd and 3rd units of spares.

what I'm surprised is how is it possible Pop plays Mason(the ultimate scrub) ahead of those scrubs.

    B.S.

Define Talent - Parker, Manu, Duncan have come through repeatedly on the largest stage and Hill, Jefferson, Dice, Blair and others have just as much "talent" as the vastly over-rated Marion, Caron, Terry and others. Each of the Mavs beyond Dirk are often inconsistent.

Dirk is a great all time talent and Kidd is one of the best PG ever (but has limitations these days, in particular speed kills him) but is pure BS that Dallas has a more talented squad.

At the worst it is a toss up but give me Spurs healthy any time over the Mavs.

Agreed. At the game the other night, in the 2nd quarter, I said "Oh ! It's Mason!", as I'm sure many of you did as well.

It's that Dallas mentality. They think because they have the second highest payroll in the NBA then they must be better than the other teams.

The only difference is, you probably said it with a big ol' grin while the rest of us were trying to grab the nearest object to throw at the TV...

Dallas has more talent if you went back in a time machine about 6 years ago. Kidd is on fumes. Marion is broken down. Butler is in decline.

Just because Kidd was an MVP candidate 6 years ago doesn't mean that he is as good now.
