Bellator 20 heads to Majestic Theatre in San Antonio on May 27, Sanchez vs. Kelly added

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Apr 30, 2010 at 2:30 pm ET
After its middleweight tournament semifinal fights were revealed on Thursday for the card, Bellator Fighting Championships today announced a host site for its upcoming Bellator 20 event: the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio.

The Texas show takes place May 27 and airs live on FOX Sports Net.

In addition to tournament bouts of Eric Schambari vs. Bryan Baker and Alexander Shlemenko vs. Jared Hess, Bellator 20 features a non-tourney heavyweight bout between UFC vet Eddie Sanchez (11-3 MMA, 1-0 BFC) and EliteXC vet Ralph Kelly (5-10 MMA, 0-0 BFC).

With Bellator 19, which takes place May 20 outside of Dallas, Bellator remains in the Lone Star State for back-to-back weeks.

"Bellator is thrilled at the opportunity to bring our brand (of) mixed-martial-arts events and our television partners at FOX Sports Net, NBC, Telemundo and Mun2 to the thousands of passionate MMA fans in the San Antonio area," Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated. "Our two main-event fights feature four of the most exciting middleweights out there right now, including a man, Alexander Shlemenko, who I believe is one of the top fighters to come out of Russia in many years. It should be a great night of fights."

Sanchez, who went 3-3 in the UFC, looks for his fourth consecutive win since his release from the organization. The California-based fighter set a still-standing Bellator record with a 10-second knockout of Jay White at Bellator 7 in 2009.

Kelly, a San Antonio-based fighter, launched his pro career in a February 2007 with a 4-1 record. However, he's since posted a 1-9 mark with stoppage losses to the likes of Brett Rogers, Justin Wren and Jonathan Ivey. The lone victory during that stretch came to one-time UFC superstar Mark Kerr.

I saw CHICAGO play there a few weeks back. Great venue for concerts, not sure how they are going to pull off fights - especially for TV.

I picked up my tickets friday, they informed me that the cage will be on the stage with some seating on the stage also. So if you figure the stage height, the seats on the stage prob a few camera men around the cage I would totally stay away from floor seating. Balcony is prob the best bet so you can get that overview into the cage

I'm not sure the fighters will be so used to fighting in such a nice venue, I think it'll attract a good crowd tho since MMA is getting bigger and bigger in the city.

I just discovered this stuff on FSN. I wish I spoke Messican, but I can still enjoy the fights. I do love me some Roger Huerta. (or however it's spelled)

Bellator Fighting Championships 27 set for Sept. 2 in Texas, tickets on sale Friday

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 15, 2010 at 12:20 pm ET
Bellator Fighting Championships returns to San Antonio's Majestic Theatre for the second time in company history with Bellator 27 on Sept. 2.

Bellator officials today officially announced the company's plans, and tickets go on sale for the event tomorrow.

The company has yet to announce any bouts for the contest, though it was revealed that the card would feature three first-round heavyweight tournament bouts in addition to five fights featuring local talent.

Bellator's third season features tournaments in the heavyweight and bantamweight divisions, as well as a 115-pound female bracket.

Bellator first visited San Antonio in May with Bellator 20. That card featured middleweight tournament semifinal victories by Bryan Baker and Alexander Shlemenko. Following those wins, Shlemenko would then go on to defeat Baker in the tournament finals and earn a shot at current champion Hector Lombard in season three.

"San Antonio is a great fight town and we were embraced very enthusiastically by the city's MMA fans during our first visit to the Majestic Theatre back in May," Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated in today's release. "We can't wait to return on Sept. 2nd with a full card of eight more exciting fights."

As with all Bellator events, Bellator 27 airs live on FOX Sports Net and during special weekend highlight shows on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2.

Tickets, which range from $25 to $65, are currently available at Ticketmaster.com.
