i like tashuan but hes not going to solve all of our problems u can pretty much get matt barnes who can do the same thing but cheaper and trade jefferson for a streaky shooter like stephon jackson
Ok. The season is over. The Richard Jefferson experiment was a failure.
Granted, I give props to the Spurs for going out and attempting to get us a "player" this past summer.
90% of this board was excited when Jefferson was acquired and I myself was included.
We were all fooled.
Anyways, he is not going to opt out. His performance over the season and during the playoffs has pretty much cemented that.
Thus, we can either trade him during the off season, before the regular season trade deadline, or let him expire.
I am not going to go over board and make some crazy trade...Bosh, Wade, LeBron, etc....and I hope neither do you.
The purpose of this thread is to try to think of some legit way to get rid of this albatross.
I purpose:
San Antonio sends: Richard Jefferson - 15 million.
Detroit sends: Tayhshaun Prince - 11 million - and a second round pick.
I am not sure if this works out exactly cap wise, but maybe a bottom feeder player can be thrown in if the second round pick is not good enough.
SA get's: A player who may be better in the half court, 3pt shooter, and a better overall defender.
Detroit get's: More cap space expiring for next year. A better player who may suit their Run N' Gun offense (it appears they are leaning that way).
Ideas? Thoughts?

Maybe if it was 2004 or 2005.
Unfortunately its 2010 and Prince is on the downside of his career.
Spurs need young, energetic, multi-dimensional, defensive oriented players to surround the Big 3. Prince only fits two of those attributes and both of those attributes of his are fading.
up to this day i can't explain why rj failed so much. the potential is there, the talent, all
he just couldn't get it together
I agree. I think Prince may be to old too, but he is the only guy I can think of when attempting to unload Jefferson straight up and get a decent return back.
Jefferson's contract makes it so hard for other teams to package players. They would basically have to throw in 3 or 4 players to even sniff 15 million.
As for a long 3 and young 3. The Spurs probably address that by either taking Paul George or Gordon Hayword.
RJ isn't a bad fit, he was simply miscast on this Spurs team. It's clear to me that the FO panicked and signed RJ in a desparate move to get back into championship contention. I don't fault them for their boldness. I fault them for not doing their homework on this guy. He's an open-court player trying to fit in on a half-court team, with a shoot-first, scoring PG. RJ also wasn't going to make anyone forget Bruce Bowen on the defensive end. He's never been known for his defense and we all saw just how poor he was at it. It just didn't fit. The Spurs should have known this.
Even if they were worried about everything you pointed out.
You simply can't turn down a Kurt Thomas/Oberto for Richard Jefferson deal.
Spurs were dealing with dead money and the money Jefferson was paid this year would have been paid to Kurt Thomas, Oberto and Bowen's retired salary regardless.
It's not like Spurs used up their cap space to sign Jefferson.
Spurs had already used up all their cap money. It was dead money and for 2 years that remained on his deal, it wasn't as bad as his salary suggests.
People need to start realizing this.
Would the Spurs be willing to take on the 4 remaining years on Andre Iguodala's contract? He'd be a upgrade on defense, rebounding and athleticism, but would be just as big of a liability with three-point shooting. I really think he'd be the best option, though.
The only way to salvage the situation now is to flip his expiring contract into another player that can actually fit.
Easier said than done.
Unless Spurs want to add on a bad salary for 3-4 more years.
Which I don't see them doing.
I'd be interested to see him spend a summer with Chip.
Now there's a plausible idea! If Parker can develop a jumpshot..
This is very true. Even though I wasn't big on RJ, I could never fault the deal.
People like to obsess over Stephen Jackson, but Stephen Jackson had to be a public, team-chemistry killing cancer all the way through November before GS finally traded him, and even then it was to an eastern team that never made the playoffs before.
IMO, the best scenario is for the Spurs to bring RJ back for another season. Then draft an athletic, long, SF (Paul George, Quincy Poindexter, or Damion James) groom him, fast track him or whatever so that he can be ready to assume the starting role by midseason, when the Spurs can trade RJ by the trade deadline in Feb 2011.
Even by then the only plausible asset the Spurs could get in return is a bad contract another team doesn't value or want.
Spurs best bet is to put Chip on an airplane wherever Jefferson decides to spend the summer and play out his contract and let it expire unless Spurs are offered a deal that makes them better. (Which I don't see happening.)
RJ may very well be salvagable, but I just don't think any of his teammates have any confidence in him, at this point. Besides, Chip may be able to help fix shooting form and mechanics, but he can't fix mentality or heart. As I stated earlier, it's painfully obvious that RJ is miscast with this team. He just isn't a mentally tough player and furthermore he needs the help of a consummate, playmaking point guard to help him flourish in a fast-paced offense. He needs to be a 2nd or 3rd scoring option - not a 4th or 5th. He's not going to get either of those things with the Spurs and, as a result, cannot be expected to succeed - even with another year under his belt.
some possibilities. Not good possibilities, but possibilities.
For teams that might just want to avoid some bad years left on contracts.
Detroit: RJ for Ben Gordon + filler. Don't know if Detroit is willing to admit failure this quickly, but owing 48 million the next 4 years for a guy who came off the bench for 14 pts at 42% from the field probably isn't a good way for Dumars to keep his job. You can only live off of past glories for so long.
Why for the Spurs: You'd finally have a bench scorer not named Manu or Tony. He's not afraid of pressure situations like former Spurs bench scorers Barry and Turkoglu.
Why not for the Spurs: A lot of money for a guy who brings numbers like George Hill.
Golden State: RJ for Maggette + filler. GS would save about $20 million off the last two years of Maggette's contract. Don't know how the organization will turnover the next 12-24 months, lots of things up in the air with ownership and coaching the last I heard.
Why for the Spurs: legit small forward scorer who managed to get 20 a game on a Warriors team that had Curry and Ellis together jacking up more than 36 shots a game. That's nearly as many shots as all the big 3 combined.
Why not for the Spurs: Won't be a 3 point threat kind of like RJ. A ball-stopper. And would he be at risk of being another RJ, a guy who doesn't deliver otherwise unless he's getting his shots and feeling good on offense?
Philadelphia: RJ for Elton Brand. The 76ers get out from under the extra $35 million they'd owe Brand and Stefanski can save his job.
Why for the Spurs: uhhhhh, help me out here guys.
Why not for the Spurs: If you think there are times when Duncan and McDyess look old and worn out . . .
Sacramento: RJ for Nocioni and Garcia/or-Beno. The Kings get out from under anywhere from 18-25 million in bad years. Beno might be playing too well to be included in this deal.
Why for the Spurs: uhhhhhhhhhh. You get one of Manu's friends on the team. He's finished, but at least he seems to care. And you get another scrub that isn't name Roger Mason.
Why not for the Spurs: Might as well keep RJ.
Washington: RJ for Arenas. Wizards would like to find a way to dump GA. Gilbert would appreciate the greater degree of firearm freedoms enjoyed in SA.
Why for the Spurs: You want firepower, you got it.
Why not for the Spurs: You want a guy to shoot you out of games, have severe season-ending injury problems, locker-room killing issues, and a loose cannon, you got it.
Toronto: RJ + filler for Calderon and Turkoglu. If Bosh bolts without compensation, the Raptors might as well blow it up by getting rid of the back up point guard and the overpaid, fat, nightlife loving disaster. If they can get back picks and/or the rights to Splitter, then all the better.
Why for the Spurs: Hey, you can get a starting SF who knows the system and can be your smallball PF, and you get an incredibly efficient back-up point guard because we know Hill probably isn't the best hope for that.
Why not for the Spurs: $20 million a year for a back-up point guard and a fat lazy bum who was a choker of Bonner-level proportions the last time he was here.
Applaud the effort but Spurs would be pretty desperate or pretty stupid or both to sign off on any of these deals.
Except the Maggette deal, which has been discussed in other threads pretty thoroughly.
I just don't see Spurs taking back that big of a contract for 3-4 years for a 4th or 5th option.
hey, I had to try.
There's just not much out there.
I kind of like a trade with Toronto though. But the likelihood of getting Hedo and Calderon away from the Raptors is almost as ridiculous as getting Bosh, for many reasons.
I just really like Calderon as a back-up point. Highest paid back-up in history, I know, and a terrible defender. But he doesn't turn the ball over, shoots 50%, and knocks down 3s. And Turkoglu back to be a smallball 4 . . . to guard Odom, to guard Frye, to guard Dirk . . . man, I might be crazy enough to think it's a nice dream to have.
I'd trust Hedo to stay home against Frye, but Odom and Dirk could work him.
Would like to see us get AI from Philly for RJ, but that's a pipedream.
That's my point.
Keep Jefferson. Hope that his at ude and play improves next year. If it doesn't then you blow him out. The options of getting in return suck.
I sure hope you mean Andre Iguodala.
Nice job looking for realistic options, but this just highlights how tough its going to be to upgrade this season. You can pretty much just keep RJ in most trade scenarios and have the same thing in the end. FO is going to be making a lot of calls this next year.
