but have you considered Holt may want the !% million dollar expiring rather than taking on some other similar size contract that goes for a longer term?
I hope he trades RJ who is a good guy but does not fit here but on the other hand, Mr. Holt may like the idea of that contract coming off the books for himself.

He really started to piss me off when he abandoned the corner 3 position which killed the Spurs' spacing. That guy was more scared than Bonner to hoist up an open 3. I realize its not RJ's strength but he really made it a weakness in the playoffs.
That said even if RJ is still a Spur - I expect him to have better numbers. Not only because it'd be a contract year but due to the fact that 2nd year Spurs players generally play better.

Someone in a Bill Simmons podcast mentioned that players would rather leave via sign n trade versus free agency because they get the extra year.
RJ's expiring contract could be huge. Not as good as Dampiers (where a team has the option to cut and only pay a portion), but the Spurs have other young assets like Bair, Hill and TP to possibly sweeten a deal.
They should go after Joe Johnson. When the Spurs traded for RJ everyone thought RJ would carry the offense at times, hit the open J, run the fast break well, play great wing defense etc. I thought "The person Spurs fans are describing isnt RJ, its Joe Johnson".
It would take a MAX offer to get him to SA but its possible. Maybe a pipe-dream.
Rudy Fernandez will definitely be available. Would Spurs fans trade Hill for him? That trade works very well for both teams.
All I am saying is the same thing that makes RJ's expiring contract appealing to other teams, could also make it appealing to our ownership.
IF free agents were chomping at the bit to come here and IF there were some good ones in 2011 and IF holt wants to gamble again.
There is no chance that RJ's value on the FA market is worth 15mil. The best thing that could happen is for RJ to opt out and agree to a sign and trade for less than he makes now, but more than he could fetch as a FA. However, The Spurs should only do this if another team is making a good offer. They shouldn't accept a bad deal just to get rid of RJ. I would rather keep RJ for another year or wait until his expiring contract becomes valuable to a team that's looking to cut costs.
I'm praying RJ opts out of his contract.
Next trade deadline will really be the first time in quite a while that the Spurs have legitimate major trading chips to offer-- RJ's large expiring contract, Parker, Blair.... If the Lakers landed Pau with Kwame's expiring plus a few other toss-ins, there's no telling what the Spurs might be able to do with even more.
The absolute worst possible scenario for the Spurs would be for RJ to opt out and walk. RJ's contract is only good to the Spurs if they still own it. It's not a very good option for RJ either.
I think RJ will be in SA next year, at least until the trade deadline. I don't see them moving him until then, if they move him at all.
I cant see him being traded after his performance this season, he is simply wayyy overpaid. And anyone who thinks he will opt out is crazy, noone in his position (not a marquee top flight player) walks from 13-14 million. The Spurs knew they would have him for 2 years, and theyll take the expiring contract with the possibility of a lockout on the horizon. There is also the chance that after a season and a full summer in the system he plays much better next year.
You're forgetting the fact that the NBA desperately wants the Lakers to win, and they could care less if the Spurs win another game in this century.
So we will not not be getting the kind of gift the Lakers got in Gasol.
There's a reason Popovich made the comment he did about that trade, because he knows a trade like that could never happen for the Spurs. It's just a fact of life in the NBA.
Prior to that trade, the Lakers were no better than a first round exit team. But with one trade, they shipped out the biggest #1 pick disappointment in League history for the most skilled big man in the NBA.
And just like that, all was back to normal in David Stern's NBA.
What happened in the 4 years the Spurs won? Was the Conspiracy Team on vacation? Or when the Pistons beat the Lakers?
Jefferson + Splitter or even Blair for Kevin Garnett.
No Way Garnett is a crippled shadow of his former self, is as old as Duncan, and can be a bit of a lockerroom issue.

Even though he may be a shadow of his former self, he's still one of the best defensive bigs in the league and an All-Star quality player. The Celtics still had the 3rd best defensive team in the league and when Garnett was playing they were the best defense in the league.
Garnett is still good enough to anchor the best defensive team in the league + a very good rebounder + an efficient scorer who forces doubles + the best passing big man in the game. Plus, him and Duncan would make a great fit offensively. He alone would make the Spurs strong contenders.
But if you prefer to stay with Jefferson and try to maximize your potential and go for another 2nd round exit next season, that's okay with me.
