too long to read, but im sure its a doozy.
Everyone is talking about how this years' playoffs suck, but this year we've already seen a number of playoff surprises/upsets:
1. Lakers over Thunder - The Thunder were the favorites coming into this series but the Lakers pulled off the shocker in the first round. If this series opened at OKC, the Lakers wouldn't have won this series. Kevin Durant is the best player in the league today and Kobe was clearly not himself in this series. As the underdogs, the Lakers were able to get this series by making some shots. They escaped Game 6 with a 1 pt. victory with a bull Pau Gasol layup at the end. What if that layup doesn't go in? The Thunder will make the WCF's next year. I think the Lakers pretty much just got shots to go down, which any team in any given year can do. Good job for pulling off the upset.
2. Phoenix over Portland - Phoenix is usually a regular season team that wins 60+ games, makes the 2nd round, and loses. This year, they weren't necessarily an impressive team. 54-28 and Amare and Nash are considered their best players...again, nothing special here. They drop the opening game of the playoffs, but this underdog team rallied to pull off the upset against the Blazers. Like the Lakers, they just got their shots to go down at the right time.
3. Utah over Denver - I expected Denver to make the WCF's this year. The key to this upset was Game 2. Denver had a duty to protect home court and couldn't do it. You go up 2-0, you most likely win a series. Denver would have been a tougher opponent for the Lakers in the 2nd round, but even Utah was the favorite in the series against the Lakers.
4. Cleveland over Chicago - The Bulls were heavily favored to win this series before the Cavs shocked the world by winning 4 out of 5. LeBron at this point only cares about how rich he'll be this summer and the fact that he won a 2nd straight MVP, and he'll lose to the Celtics.
5. Orlando over Charlotte - This Charlotte team led the league in fewest opponents' points per game allowed this year at only 93.81 PPG allowed. They were 6th in the league in opponent FG% allowed. They also had the 2nd lowest opponent 3-pt. FG% allowed. A very good defensive team superior to Orlando. How did Orlando win? By doing what the Lakers and Suns did in their series' - they made shots. Plain and simple. This Orlando team is nothing special.
6. Hawks over Bucks - Anyone who just looks at the Orlando-Atlanta series scores will tell you that this year's Hawks are by far the worst team in league history to make the playoffs. Thanks for wasting everyone's time and money dumbasses. Atleast the Bucks would have made it a 6 game series.
7. Suns over Spurs - Quite possibly this year's biggest playoff upset. No one expected the Suns to do anything against the Spurs. If Dragic, Frye, and Dudley think they're big shots, wait until they each average 3 ppg in the series against the Lakers. Everyone has beginner's luck at one point or another. Theirs just came at the right time. This Phoenix team has no shot against the Lakers. Why even show up to the series?
8. Lakers over Jazz - If Stern was a good commissioner, Kobe would have been banned from the league in 2003, Ron Artest would been banned in 2004, Derek Fisher would not have been allowed to use his daughter as an excuse to rejoin the Lakers, and the Gasol trade would never have happened. Instead we have a team who gets the most favorable calls from the officials in the league. Which was how they were able to pull off two series upsets already. The Jazz were heavily favored to win this one. But it's the Lakers. What will Stern do in a Kobe/LeBron Finals? You can't give both of them the le.
