Amazon has an acer 15.6" HD screen, i5 2.26 gh processor w/turbo boost up to 2.58, 500gb drive, all the DVD supermulti drive/card reader/integrated webcam stuff and 4 GB ddr3 for like $635. It's the only i5 I've seen for less than $800
I would say it depends on what kind of laptop you want.
+1
If you're looking to game, the Asus thread I posted is by far the best deal you are going to find for a high powered gaming laptop.
I could give two s about gaming on a laptop. The screen is smaller thank my desktop and its never going to be as upgradeable.
No, I'm looking for a strong system that will likely have to last me 3 or so years and still be a fairly strong system. The main use will be research applications which may or may not require running large simulations so it will need a 64 bit OS.
Other than that yeah, I don't care what type of GPU it has but I do want to get the best hardware bang for my buck in a mobile platform.
In that case, slickdeals.net is pretty awesome, but not necessarily consistent. Stay AWAY from HP or Compaqs.
What kind of price range are you looking at? I'd personally say Asus and Toshiba are your best bets on brands.
I've had 2 Asus netbooks that were topnotch but I need a real machine now. I'd like to stay under a grand but I'm slightly flexible on that. Battery life is actually fairly important as well.
I usually check Gottadeal which is the same type of site as slickdeals but nothing really has popped out at me as of yet.

Just go buy something, all laptops are cheap right now.
newegg.com
xoticpc.com <-- bought my gaming laptop here, but they also have "business, and home" laptops.
If you would still consider an ASUS I would take a look at the U30JC-A1, if you're okay with the screen size.
Intel Core i3-350M 2.26GHz processor (3MB cache)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
13.3-inch glossy LED-backlit 16:9 display (1366 x 768) Intel GMA HD integrated with NVIDIA Optimus (GeForce 310M w/ 512MB DDR3)
4GB DDR3 800MHz RAM (2GB x 2)
320GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B hard drive
Intel Wi-Fi Link 1000BGN Wi-Fi, Atheros AR8131 Gigabit LAN
You can get between 5-8 hours of battery life, depending on usage. Ir runs for about $900 at most places.
Yeah I've liked my ASUS machines. THat doesn't sound half bad.
Are you looking for a super portable laptop, or a larger screen? There is a lot you didn't specify in your original post. :P
Do not want a larger screen. 13-15 inches is fine. I'm one of the people that see no point to having large screen laptops unless you want to lug around even more weight.
What are your opinions on refurbished?
Personally I would never buy anything refurbished, unless I really need it and don't have enough money.
because something that breaks down once, we more likely break down again and in less time, than a new device,
Not true. Often a re-certified device was never broken in the 1st place; just returned and not legally allowed to be sold again as 'new'. And also, refurbished devices go though more rigorous testing before reentry into the market than new devices often get.
Certain things refurbished are fine. The only device I would avoid refurbished is hard drives and flash memory. Data is the most valuable part of a computer, and the chance that a drive could have been questionable once before is a dealbreaker.
In any event, I'm not making a decision for a couple of weeks so hopefully I can snatch a good deal.
I get a nice discount with Dell so I may price some systems there as well. I get a decent discount with Apple as well, but I really don't understand what makes their prices so much higher.
Manny, Fry's is having their 25th anniversary sale right now, you might be able to find a deal there.
I would recommend you don't go with dell... I got a lot of friends who claim they break down easily... of course I know just about anyone can get a virus on a computer, but from what I've heard more complaints on them than anything.
