Santa Monica Promenade is cool if you have a chick with you and she wants to shop. There were some decent places to eat there too. Everything is expensive. The SM Pier is pretty lame but the beach around there is nice. All depends on where you're staying and if you have access to a car.
Yeah I like New Port over Santa Monica. The last time I was in SoCal though me and the people I was with did a terrible time avoiding rush hour traffic. Idk how long it took to drive back to my friend's house in Chino Hills from Newport.
Newport is so far south. Unless he's staying near there I'm not sure it's worth it.
