A hard-core public option would empower employees to seek more rewarding employment, even self-employment, as Pelosi suggests. The last thing corps want is mobile, empowered, "emancipated" wage slaves.

I know at least two of my friends who have designs on owning their own business. The ideas and research are there. Their business plans are at varying stages of completion, but all of last year, both of them got to a point where they just kind of stagnated. It was exactly because of health insurance. One has twin boys (about 1.5 years) and a wife, and one is a single father of an 8 year old. It sucks, because the former has to employ at least two people very close to the beginning (within one month of opening), but it would be irresponsible to allow his family, especially his children, to go without insurance, and he recognizes that. I don't think that this is an uncommon story.

Yes it's funny people don't quite get yet, that they will still have to PAY for their government health insurance. Whether or not it will be cheaper, remains to be seen.

There is no "govt health insurance" for most people.

Individuals will be able to (must) buy PRIVATE insurers' exchange offerings as they are mandated to do by the health insurance reform bill. The big change here is that the private insurers must insure individuals no matter what their medical history.

Some who qualify for Medicare's lowered age threshold will be able to buy in to that GOVT insurance.

My hope is that eventually the exchanges will be completely replaced by Medicare for all as a strong public option, taking private health insurance completely out of employers' responsibility.

If it makes anyone feel better, I don't think that the watered down bill that passed will change many (or any) minds about quitting their jobs to start a business of their own. Public option wouldn't have been "universal health care" but it would have been much better than what is currently happening.
