This years' draft is deep with talent all the way into the second round, which gives the spurs a good chance to grab some players that can contribute right away. The common theme in this years draft is "athleticism" every position group has guys with incredible athleticism, something the spurs sorely needed this past season. Most spurs fans agree that the biggest needs for our team is an athletic wing and athletic big; this year's draft is loaded with both. The one thing the spurs don't need at all is another PG, which is a good thing because this years draft doesn't have many good ones anyway plus we are set with TP and GH. So with this all being said here some realistic picks the spurs can make that can improve our team immediately:

Are 1st round pick should be a SF, but if a quality big slides from the lottery I wouldn't mind if the spurs take him like Hassan Whiteside, (has been compared to Dwight Howard if he put on weight) so seeing how the mock drafts look like and the prospects falling around the spurs 20th pick realistically this is who the spurs should draft in the 1st round if they are available and information on each prospect:

    1) Hassan Whiteside, Like I said above if he falls to the 20th pick which is a reach most mocks have him being taken at 13 or 14, but you never know what can happen, He's the only big I would draft before SF in the 1st round bc his athletic abilities are exactly what is needed next to TD (Athletic enough to guard Mobile 4s and big enough to guard Cs), even if Splitter is coming over spurs should still draft him, he could end up being the franchise after TD retires, but this is a big wish.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AJFU...eature=related

    2) Paul George, if we are looking for an athletic wing, this is the spurs guy right here, he has the good all around skills; he's extremely athletic, can shoot, create own shoot, can defend, can play 2, 3, and some 4 if needed. Realistically he will probably be available right in the spurs range so he should be our first choice if Hassan doesn't miraculously slip.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uXmDwm8UJY

    3) James Anderson, good all around game, athletic, and can shoot the 3

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/james-anderson
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...Anderson-5106/

    4) Quincy Pondexter, Very athletic, can do everything

    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...ondexter-1122/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieuZL...eature=related

    5) Stanley Robinson, I know many spurs fans have said we should draft him 1st because he is so athletic, and yes he is probably the most athletic player in the draft, but if you watch him play that's all he really is, (an athletic player) his bball IQ insn't really high, his ballhandling is subpar, and he can't create for himself. He needs to improve a lot on all of his skills, but he is no doubt one of the best athletes in the draft, if not the best.

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/stanley-robinson
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...Robinson-1075/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fk5DqNS5mo

    6) Damion James, He's probably the same type of player that Stanley Robinson is, just little bit less athletic.

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/damion-james
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Damion-James-1074/

Here's 2 other big prospects that are kind of like G. Hill when he was in the draft (nobody knows much about them, but can be a good player in the NBA)

Kevin Seraphin, many scouts are talking a lot about this guy's athleticism and body, plus he's got skills to go along with them.

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/kevin-seraphin
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...Seraphin-5278/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lHZveuKK5U
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGtkDU_HvaI

Ryan Richards, this is the guy all the scouts are talking about at the Pre-draft combine, by far the most impressive big there according to the chatter, plus he's only 19, check out his videos.

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/ryan-richards
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ryan-Richards-1272/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyCbD...eature=related

Both of these guys I would be okay with picking in the 1st round, both can help us right away.

Now the 2nd round pick, if we pick a SF or wing in the 1st round we should then get big in the 2nd round and vice versa, so the 2nd pick should be:

    If we pick a SF or wing in the 1st round then we should pick either Kevin Seraphin or Ryan Richards if they are still available, if not here is some other big prospects that can help us;

    1) Jerome Jordan, he's big, long, and pretty athletic, his athletic ability reminds me of Tim when he was younger

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/jerome-jordan
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jerome-Jordan-5160/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdyRmtyMfMY

    2) Jarvis Varnado, best shotblocker in the country, can guard mobile 4's

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/jarvis-varnado
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...-Varnado-1189/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiUU-RcE_2g

Now if we draft a big in the 1st round then we should draft a SF or wing in the 2nd, we should 1st draft any of the SF prospects mentioned above if they're available, if not here's some other prospects:

    1) Darrington Hobson, Good all around game, he reminds me of a Courtney Lee but bigger and more athletic

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/darrington-hobson
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...n-Hobson-5833/

    2) Charles Garcia, He's a tweener many scouts have him as a SF and others PF, but he has the athletic ability to play both

    http://www.nbadraft.net/players/charles-garcia
    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...s-Garcia-5800/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdRiL...eature=related

And if all the prospects mentioned above are taken already when are 2nd round pick comes arounds, then it doesn't matter who we take because these are the only players that I think can help the spurs in some way right now.

Now what do you guys think about this years' draft, prospects, who we should draft 1st and 2nd round, ect. . . . .

you did a lot of work, so I would not discourage you, other than to think about adding to one of the other bunch of draft threads already out there. I know it is an early off-season, but it does not make that much sense to have too many general draft threads.

All I know is if the Spurs get two quality players in the draft, we won't see them get any time before Tim Duncan retires.

There is no doubt this draft is deep but it is also full of potential guys who aren't really ready to contribute right away - the Spurs window is now - so the tough part for FO is balancing between getting better now and building for the future

That being said if no one dropd down to you at 20th then I think the best case scenario is to trade and try to get three players whether combination of getting two 2nd rounders or rights/and pick to combine with current 2nd rd pick (OKC, Dallas, NY, Minnesota, Miami, Phoenix, and Milwaukee all have 2 or more 2nd round picks) - the Spurs avoid guaranteed money and if you can could traded with Bucks, Knicks, or Thunder then you could pickup the leftover of the group of SF that all are reated fairly close to each other (maybe Ebanks, Robinson, or Poindexter) and then still get a big like Jordan or stretch 4 that is physical like Tiny Gallon (at ude issues would fit Pop's love of a shooting 4 while still being able to defend/rebound) and then add either PG (Sheron Collins or Jerome Randle) or international prospect to stash in Europe

All in all unless unexpected drops in your lap trading is best case scenario

----and the Spurs draft Luke Babbitt and Art Parakhouski.

More important to have players than athletes. See Alfredric Hughes.

I noticed a couple of 6'9 power forwards on the list. I hope we don't get anymore of that.

Great takes but I disagree with drafting a big in the 2d round -- just about any domestic player over 6'5" drafted deep in the 2d round is either an athletic project (that never works out) or a knucklehead or both.

I think your more likely to get an undersized player who might be able to contribute down where the Spurs pick. (49?) Take your big earlier.

A really nice pick for the Spurs might be Jerome Randle, the 5'10" lighting quick point guard from Cal. He could also fill a need.

He's a good kid and he can penetrate and shoot from distance lights out. Keep an eye on him.

I'm sick of this. Other teams draft nice players, and use them. Spurs have wasted many choices over the years.

Don't forget injured/too slow (e.g. DaSean Butler unless someone surprises me).

This is why not making the playoffs was better for the success of the teams future. They could have gotten Whiteside or a better big with the 14th pick. Those 6 slots can make a big difference in the player they get.

The draft is hit & miss, although with the Spurs drafting Manu, Hill, Blair, Splitter, etc..not sure where you get the Spurs have "wasted" so many picks...go look at some other teams draft history..ie. the players they could have picked as opposed to the players they did pick...you will see the Spurs have done a pretty good job when it comes to the draft.

Backsliding? I was saying this all along and was not pulling for wins to make the playoffs because I knew the spurs were not going far in the playoffs this year. As high a draft pick as possible was better for the team.

Normally I would agree with missing the playoffs since I wasn't confident in the Spurs going far in the playoffs....but beating the Dallas Mavs...that was worth 6 slots to me

I'd rather draft intelligence, or at least length. Outside of the big 3, there's not really a high IQ bunch of guys, guys like Barry or Oberto or Horry in the past.
