The only thing I dont like about this game is the public/private multiplayer. It just seems barren compared to what you can do in single player.

In Multiplayer, you can do free-for-all duels, form a posse and face off against another posse, do bandit hideouts, or go hunting. Unless Im missing something, thats about it.

I really hope the DLC thats comming out expands the multiplayer so you can play poker and , do missions, stuff like that. You can only own so many newbs before it gets boring.

To me, public is a waste of time as it seems only 8 people can be in a session at one time.

I personally would like Rockstar to create a MMO out of this so we can see huge posse's going at it to control territory and .

have you tried the Grab the Gold, and other type of multiplayer modes?

sounds like you are only talking about free roam

The list of players that you can see may be misleading.... I entered a gang battle with only my possie showing in free roam, then all of a sudden we had a full 16 player room going my :dead eye" was unstoppable!

The multiplayer is seriously fun. The maps are great since they're actual locales in the game and thus, tend to be sprawling and diverse.

I've never been a fan of autoaim games, though back in the day I played a lot of GoldenEye etc before I got into pc shooters hardcore. But, it turns out being okay in this rendition, mainly because you can use a ton of cover in the game and it takes a few shots to the chest from any gun to get killed, so the autoaim adds to what could have been a pretty patchy aiming system for a fairly fast paced multiplayer.

Overall, a really fun game, glad I bought it. btw I've seen 7on7 in a few matches I played (PS3).

I ran across my first rattlesnake and that was interesting...to get bit during a gun battle...

I think my favorite part of this game is the contrast of a dying era/birth of the modern 20th century. The conversations John Marsten has regarding the skeptical ways of those who've settled the West and the encroachment of the East and the paranoia that some of the residence have. Now, I think the level of conversation is highly evolved and somewhat out of place for this type of setting, it does lend a sense of intelligence to the game.

right, so I thought I beat the game yesterday, but I didn't get any END CREDITS

I was wrong. There is 1 more official storyline mission you have to do to get the END CREDITS and the real ending to the game....

it doesn't even show up on the map. its one of the secret achievements too.

I agree. I like that they chose the early 20th century route instead of the usual post-Civil War western. Rockstar (unsuccessfully IMO) tried to move into a more serious narrative with GTA IV. RDD works perfectly. As you said, there's a level of intelligence absent from other Rockstar productions, but there's still plenty of humor. I also like that fact that you can play the game while abiding all the laws if you so desire, that isn't possible on GTA.

    You want intellectual discussion?

    Spoilers below

Let's talk about the Strange Man, from the "I Know You" stranger encounters.

He's the Devil or the Grim Reaper.

He's there at John's .....barn moment. Look behind the men. He's standing there, all silently watching.

During his final encounter with John, bullets don't hurt him.

During his final encounter with John, he judges the ground he is on and says "This is a fine spot" ...... it just happens to be the very spot of a gravestone in the future.

Has anyone figured out how to do the gun duels? I feel stupid for asking, but the tutorial doesn't help me and I just can't seem to figure out how to actually shoot the other guy yet.
Right stick down then up. And shoot him when the little target is at it's smallest.
yeah i had trouble with that too

basically, you have to paint ALL 6 little crosshairs (to use all 6 bullets in your revolver) onto the enemy so your guy will shoot.

when the crosshair is white, its the most accurate. when its big and red, least accurate.

whoever paints all 6 bullets onto the enemy first while in dead eye, then shoots first

thats what i learned and now i never lose one
Just to clarify the exact mechanics of the Duel...

The important thing to pay attention to are the gauges on the right side of the screen and the Aim Reticle.

The Blue gauge is yours, the Red gauge is the enemy.

You'll notice that when you press fire, the gauge will fill by either small or large amounts (depending on the accuracy of your reticle and the area of the enemy youre hitting).

Every time you press the Fire button, a black line appears after the filling the gauge by a bit (or a lot, read further). Each black line is a bullet and every increment shows how "well" you aimed.

Who wins the Duel is determined by this gauge, not by the amount of rounds you select. I routinely win Duels with only selecting one shot (to the head or gun). So here is a step by step and its explanation...

After the stare down, you can use the Right Stick to put your hand closer to your gun (giving you the jump when it comes time to draw). You can pull first, which gives a small boost to your gauge but in doing so, you incur an accuracy penalty (the reticle cycles quickly). If you wait for your opponent to draw first, you dont get a boost to the gauge but your accuracy is FAR better (the reticle cycles slowly).

What I mean is, the reticle doesnt cycle nearly as fast (from red (inaccurate) to white (accurate), so its easier to paint the target with all accurate shots.

Basically, you can win every draw only painting one target (usually the head or weapon). When you wait for your opponent to draw first, just life the reticle and take your time to line up the shot, select it when its White and watch a one shot, one kill. Your gauge jumps through the roof so long as your shot is accurate and in a proper location.

I farm Fame and Honor by cheating in Poker, getting caught, and being forced to Duel. I then shoot the weapon out of the hands (one accurate shot = Full Gauge) of my opponent, which is +200 Honor and +100 Fame...every single time.

Side note: I figured out Dueling by proxy of trying to learn how to cheat in Poker. Seeing as I physically cannot keep the Cheat gauge out of the red, every time I tried to cheat, I got caught...which meant a Duel, usually with the General Store owner in Armadillo. Killing him in a Duel closes the General Store for 5 days, but worse than that was there now were only 2 guys at the Poker table (less $$$ on the table). SoI kept trying to disarm him in the ensuing Duel and couldnt do it consistently. After many tries and a lot of re-loading, I figured it out.

Just be accurate and pay attention to your gauge...if your first painted target fills your gauge to MAX (it certainly can if done right), just sit back and wait for the DeadEye time to run out, because you won with one shot.

I play as basically a law-abiding citizen in RDR, but criminals I get creative with.

My favorite thing to do with hogtied criminals is take them to a place with lanterns. Get close and drop them next to/on top of a lantern, step back and shoot the latern. There is a certain pleasure I get from burning a completely helpless, hogtied enemy alive for trying to kill me.

My next thing I want to try is dropping a hogtied individual off in the middle of Bear or Cougar country. Dont know if the animals will attack a hogtied person, but I hope they do. Drop a guy off near a pack of wolves and enjoy the screams.

I'm not reading the previous posts for fear of spoilers/cool surprises, but does anyone have this for PS3? I might get it within the week and I'd like to be a gang member if anyone's got PS3 on here (my friends have XBOX). I have loose morals, but I don't mind being a good guy either.

Thank you for the write up. Let me ask you this though... when do you paint your crosshair on your opponent's gun if you're going for a non-lethal dual? While it's still in his holster? While he's bringing it up to aim? Or when he's pointing it at you? I can't seem to hit it. I always hit his face on accident or hit his right hand, which doesn't count for anything.

I'm actually trying this on Muller (the German guy in Mexico), maybe the game doesn't let you settle this in a non-lethal way???
