Actually, it's only slightly related to him.
Most of the talk in the think tank is focusing on the 20th pick and trying for a long wing there. I understand that, we have needed that for years.
If I am right though, the only bigs under contract are Duncan, McDyess and Blair. McDyess and Tim are going to need limited minutes next regular season and Blair is a bulldog but a rather short one for the NBA. With Ian and Bonner on the roster this year in the playoffs, the depth of the bigs still seemed a bit shallow.
Who do you folks see being on the roster as the bigs this coming season?
Keep in mind, we only have the MLE and LLE, the draft and trade.
If Splitter comes over, we still need some more depth to limit Tim and Antonio's minutes. Who else will be on the roster?

I don't see either coming back. I don't see that as a bad thing either. I know some posters say that Pop likes a big who can spread the floor, but in 99 and 03, we had Tim and David [though I can't recall all of the subs]. In 05 we had back ups in Rasho, Glenn Robinson, Tony Massenburg, and in 07 we had Elson and Fabricio. The Bonner project has failed. During the season he made his shots but for the second consecutive year, he was over all a non factor in the playoffs. Good riddance.
As for Ian, I'm saying it, he's a bust. He may be a bust due to the coaching staff not giving him enough playing time, however some also argue that if they liked what they saw from him already what we don't see behind closed doors, then he would have more playing time. Despite whose fault it may or may not be, I think the only way he's resigned is if he's to be included in some sort of trade deal. It would baffle me to see people talk about "free Mahinmi" or "why can't Ian get more minutes". These questions made me realize: Look what it has come to.
Splitter would be a great help, assuming he's capable of living up to most of the hype. In my opinion, Tim needs someone who can take up his mantle. Someone who he can take under his wing, the same way David Robinson did to him. If DeJuan were at least 4 inches taller, I think we'd have that individual, but he's not. Likewise, I think Splitter will be an awesome role player for this team, but not the heir to Tim's throne.
Pop says it will likely be a quiet off-season, and doesn't anticipate as much change as last season. However when have we ever known him to be so vocal about his and R.C.'s plans for the team during the off-season.
It'll be interesting to see for sure, but as far as Matt Bonner and Ian Mahinmi are concerned, its time to chalk up those contract/pick as a loss.

Well, a long wing will almost certainly play minutes at PF if he's any good. I'm fine with bringing Ian back, but I'd also like to look around to see if someone else might be able to contribute like a shot blocking specialist. I think Greg Stiemsma was picked up by the Wolves, but Kurt Looby or someone like him would be nice to take a look at in summer league, for example.
Not a whole lot available in the FA market for the peanuts we will have left if Splitter takes most of the MLE. Maybe they could try to salvage Patrick O'Bryant's career or something.

Any chance we can trade Mahinmi for a late second round pick? Maybe someone who goes undrafted?
^^Mahinmi is a free agent and we could only trade him in a sign and trade deal which could not be done since draft day precedes when free agents can sign.
In a nuts as thing look right now, we have:
Point guard: Parker, Temple
Two guard: Hill, Ginobili
Small forward: Jefferson, Gee, Hairston
Power forward: Duncan, Blair
Center: McDyess
That is 10 players counting the D-league guys who have non-guaranteed deals. Add Splitter and the 20th pick and you have a potential 12 man roster. Even with Splitter, we are thin on the front line since McD and Timmy should only be playing < 30 minutes next season.
Maybe there is something to the theory of Ian coming back next season.
Interesting when you consider Haislip and Theo Ratliff were jettisoned last season.
Maybe that big guy from Texas can be drafted in the second round. (Dexter Pittman)

I wouldn't be surprised if Ian comes back, especially if they use the MLE on Splitter. There's aren't going to be any bigs you can get worth playing for the vet-min. That'd give the Spurs 5 bigs with McDyess, Blair, Splitter, Ian, and of course Tim.
If they don't bring Splitter over, or he costs less than expected to bring over, the Spurs will probably let Ian walk and sign a veteran with a bit more range and self-control. I have no idea who is available that would fit that...
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Ian come back. He was the only person besides Tim this year that could play with his back to the basket, which meant we had a big hole when Tim wasn't on the floor. I'd hope they'd pick up someone with that kind of game, just so we have that option when Tim takes his much needed rests.
I don't understand your post. According to you:
1) Ian will get a big offer
2) Spurs did not want to give him around the LLE even
3) Ian will stay with the Spurs next year
So, that means the Spurs match or exceed the "big offer" (that probably is bigger than the 1.7 they already don't want to pay) to keep him.
Sounds unlikely that he is Spur next year if numbers 1 and 2 are accurate.
I would still love to see what Mahinmi can do when given good minutes in games on a consistent basis.
The reality of the situation, more than likely, is that Mahinmi will be gone. I mean the Spurs interviewed Favors which could possibly mean they will trade during the draft to attempt a shot at him. I think Ians' best chance to remain in a Spurs uniform is if Tiago Splitter doesn't cross the pond.
agreed its probably 50/50 if ian comes back i wont call him useless yet some team will pick him up being hes a young 6'11 forward with some talent just dont know if ever realize that talent in a spur uni

2) Ian will get a "real" big offer(s), and simply ignore them in the spirit of loyalty and come back to the Spurs (the team that refused to extend him no less) for LESS than 1.7 mil.

I just hope some team is insane enough to offer Bonner more than the vet min, so he's finally out of our radar. After that, I would prefer some shot blocker specialist like Chump said, but I suspect we're going to be playing quite a bit of small ball so maybe what we're looking for is more of a wing that rebounds well and has experience playing that type of game. Maybe a vet, maybe a young guy.
The way I see it RJ is simply not going to man that position, even if he's going to be on a contract season.

I'd like Mahinmi to come back and next season should be plenty of opportunities...
4 spots are for Tim, Splitter (if signed), Blair and Dice ... then comes Mahinmi.
For the sixth I agree we need a stretch "four" and that one can be Bonner or someone else (maybe someone that we can have trading Jefferson, considering he was considered a possibility for playing the four and he failed in that role : for example, Maggette has shown that he can play like a 4, and for a four he have a decent outside shot).
The problem with Ian couild be the money situation : I really don't understand with what money we can sign him :
1) if rj decide to not exercise his option (we stil have the mle or we are under the cap ? in case, we can use just the mkoney under the cap ?)
2) if rj decide to exercise his option (we need to use the mle or we still have some kind of rights on Ian soi we can sign him not touching the MLE or LLE ?)
IIRC if you don't count Richard Jefferson or any of our free agents, we're around 5 mil under the cap.
We have bird rights on Mahinmi, and can sign him without using exceptions.
