go to a real city, make sure you don't let any infants crawl the street and try not to get bitten by a teen wolf while in town.
SA foodies, I'm looking to you for help.
My family and I will be heading to SA in June for a week long vacation, and I'm trying to mix things up a bit while I'm down there.
A little background: My family is from SA. I get back every 1-2 years, my Dad and brother haven't been back in 18 years or so, and the SIL has never been.
Mi Tierra is ALWAYS on the list, but I'm looking for 2 more places. Any ideas on a Mexican and a Tex-Mex restaurant? We will have a rental car, so getting around won't be an issue.
Off the topic of food, I'm also looking for something fun for my brother and Dad to do while my SIL and I are shopping for one of the afternoons.
My brother has scars on his legs from his military time, so waterparks are out due to the fact he's self-conscious of his scars.
Any ideas?
I'd appreciate any help I can get.![]()

the Tex-Mex; drive out to Luling and go to City Market to get some of the best BBQ in the world.
Went to Luling a few weekends ago.![]()
Definitely worth the drive, right? Their brisket and sausage is amazing. Pretty good ribs too.
I'm not much of a fan of City Market's sauce though. Then again, sauce gets saved for the bread and the beans when I have really high quality BBQ.
The original ChaCha's on Bandera road about 1/2 mile inside loop 410. Get the top shelf margarita on the rocks and if you like REALLY hot salsa ask your server to bring you some "waiters sauce" from the back. My personal menu favorite is the ceviche tostadas.
Yeah it is. My MIL goes quite often so sometimes I'll tag along for the ride with the kids or I'll just put in my order.
The sauce is okay. Kids love it.
As for a Mexican? I'd check out of one of the diners, drive-ins or dives for the best. That is what we've been doing lately.
I just picked up a 15# standing rib roast to BBQ this weekend.
When I grew up in SA, my family used to go to La Fogata on the regular. That place was great, had really traditional atmosphere and amazing food. Their salsa is one of a kind as well.
Anyone been there recently? What's it like now?
la jacala, la fogata, los barrios, paloma blanca
your brother and dad could go to the hill country (enchanted rock for instance), the zoo, and they can still go to fiesta texas and just ride the rides and avoid the water park.
We are heading out to Luling because we used to live out there. I'll check it out. Thanks, BB.
Panchitos off McCullough hands down...
or
El Mirador on S St. Mary's street downtown is also one of the favorites.
Whenever I'm in town, me and the fam always go to one of the two.
you want real mexican or crap?
guajillos (corner of blanco/410) - expensive
tacos de julio (fredericksburg close to the HEB off hildebrand) - cheap w/tons of food
los robertos (bitters/281, right next to the falls bar) - cheap w/tons of food
Mi Tierra blah, I think that place is for tourist.
Any thoughts on Rosario's?
Jacala, La Hacienda, El Chaparrel or go out 281 S to La Cabana.
I haven't been to Rosairos in years, but it was good. La Fonda on Main is also good and they have a great margarita!
Oh, and if your brother is REALLY bored, he can come clean my house!
Haha If that's his only other option, shopping will sound pretty good to him, I'm sure.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'm taking the time to check out the websites.
Keep 'em coming!
La Fogata salsa is incredible. I always have to get a bottle of it to go whenever I eat there. I also like that I can get decent mole from there.
Yeah, Mi Tierra isn't that good, although I love their bakery.
Jacala used to be spectacular, but took a big nosedive in the 90s. Unfortunately, my favorite Mexican place, El Asadero Culebra, has been closed more than 10 years (though after doing a google search, it appears there is another place further down Culebra with that name now).
Aldaco's in Stone Oak, or El Mirasol are two of my favorites. I highly recommend both.
for sure. place sucks except for the bakery as mentioned already.
totally disgusting and overpriced. you can get better at las palapas if that says anything.
El Jalisco on FM 3009 is my favorite.
Blanco Cafe on Blanco near Hildebrand has the best cheese enchiladas. Picante Grill on Broadway also has fantastic food. The cochinita pibil is fantastic.
