Posters want to talk about the bad all the time. Scola for a 2nd rounder. Jefferson...the bust. Ect.... But lets flip the script...You youngsters may not remember this trade but it actually kept the Spurs a float when times were tough. It was Alvin Robertson and Cadillac for Terry mings. Terry did great for us. It was right when David arrived in his rookie year. If not for mings...it would have been a very bad experience for David. Without a doubt. Put it to you this way...the Spurs won 56 games with Robinson as a rookie and the main reason was because of mings. He averaged over 22 points in Davids rookie year. And a lot of Spurs fans dont acknowledge certain under the radar trades.

This led to another lopsided trade for us which was Murray(a draft pick) for Dale Ellis. Another sick trade in our favor.

Yeah, I thought of that one too. Another one that bears mentioning is the Mychal Thompson trade the Spurs made with the Lakers. The Spurs got Frank Brickowski, Petur Gudmundsson and 2 draft picks. The Lakers ended up with 2 consecutive les. The Spurs stunk up the league enough to get into the lottery. Teams questioned the Spurs on that trade. That summer's draft yielded David Robinson.

Thats not a savvy trade...it was pure luck that we got David. I was trying to make deals that flew under the radar and were steals for us. Not deals that were connected like the 6 degrees of kevin Bacon.
Actually, I misspoke. They went to the lottery but Robinson was taken with the Spurs' pick and they got Cadillac Anderson with the Laker's draft pick. Anyways, the trade was underrated in my mind. Thanks for clarifying what you meant. You meant savvy trade, and not necessarily an underrated trade.
You're right. I look at a savvy trade as an underrated trade for us. Anytime we come out with a steal...I like it.

Drossos offered to loan $225,000 to Foreman, with Gervin as the collateral. If Foreman failed to pay off the $225,000 by February, Gervin would belong to San Antonio. Naturally, Foreman failed to repay the $225,000, and Gervin's contract became the property of the Spurs.

Yeah, it boggles the mind that Gervin was actually acquired for just $225,000.
Back then 225 K was a lot of money. Heck, we're talking 35 years ago when this happened. 225K is a lot of money today. lol

That led to a playoff exit and those two players not being Spurs the next season. If that's not the most "eh" trade ever, I don't know what is. I know what it isn't and that's underrated.
I wasn't meaning it to be the most underrated trade ever.
Two biggest were:
Bill Curley for Sean Elliott
And the move for Gervin. IMO
Did Daniels get traded to Portland from the Vancouver Grizzlies before coming here?
No he was traded to San Antonio from Vancouver in the summer of 1998 for #24th pick of the 98' Draft Felipe Lopez and Carl Herrera.
Daniels was the 4th pick in 1997 draft. The Spurs acquired in him in June, 1998 in exchange for Carl Herrera and Felipe Lopez. He was traded to Portland in the Steve Kerr trade in August, 2002.
Herrera/Lopez for Daniels looks like a pretty savvy trade.
Thanks! I didn't think Daniels had played for anyone but Vancouver when he came here. I forgot that he only lasted one year with the Grizz. Once again, the Grizz give up quality assets for very little. BTW, I think Chauncey Billups was the third pick in 1997 with Keith Van Horn being the second pick if memory serves.
The Gervin trade is the best trade the Spurs ever made (cash for Hall of Famer), but I thought the Swen Nater for Larry Kenon trade was a heck of a trade. Larry was the wing man for Gervin when Ice was really rolling in the run and gun days.
Kenon was close to a 20/10 player from 1975 to 1979. Unfortunately, he left as a free agent in 1980 (probably over a small amount of money) and the Spurs received 2 second round picks from the Chicago Bulls as "compensation" from commissioner Larry O'Brien. There was no unrestricted free agency at that time. That's when even the top players in the game made less that what benchwarmers do today.
Two 2s for a 20/10 player who was 28 years old and in his prime. You have to remember the Spurs were considered Red Headed Stepchildren by the established NBA hierarchy in those days since they were from the ABA - they were treated accordingly. The old guard NBA Bulls wanted to give Artis Gilmore some help and Kenon was that help and the league did not want to give SA adequate compensation, which was part of signing a free agent from another team back then. Of course Artis came to SA in 1982 for Mark Olberding (for sure) and (I think) Gene Banks. Artis was supposed to be an answer to deal with LAs Jabbar, but that never really worked out.

Gervin made the Spurs popular and his fan base kept the Spurs from folding or leaving SA. He was the franchise.
