I recommend everyone give Swype a try. It's free, and it's pretty impressive software. If you don't like it, you can always go back to the regular keyboard... and I believe Swype functions as a standard keyboard as well if you want to use it like that.

I love Swype. it was preloaded on my phone. I hardly use the physical keyboard now lol.... cool thing is you can doubl tap if a word is wrong and change with tha quickness

I tried to DL it directly to my hero and I got an error that it was not supported (before the DL even started). I did adjust my settings to allow installation of non-market apps, so I don't know what I am doing wrong. Did you install it directly to the evo, or did you do it through Sync?

I ran everything directly on the Evo. Opened the Swype program with "market", I believe.

Anyway, made a big change to my homescreen layout today. I downloaded the ADW Launcher. I believe it's for devices that are 2.1 and later. A "launcher" is exactly what HTC Sense is -- it's the interface by which your phone operates and moves through different windows and screens when you hit the "home" button.

The ADW is pretty spiffy, and I'm just cutting my teeth on it. The coolest thing is that it allows you to view your home screens in landscape mode -- which is far better than the stock HTC Sense, which forces portrait mode all the time.

Anyway, here's what my home screen looks like now:



This is with Beautiful Widgets, which does cost money, but I think it's definitely worth it, especially since PDW disables the HTC weather widget. Worth the trade-off in my book, there are literally thousands of skins for the beautiful widget app.

And my toggle screen (for turning on and off services)



The icons on the right here are through a draggable dock that operates similarly to the notification toolbar -- it normally displays the two programs you want to set to the home bar, and then if you grab it and drag up (or to the side here), it reveals space for up to 6 programs that you can throw in there as hidden shortcuts.

Yes it is, almost every spec is doubled on this phone. The only thing that is "common" on this phone is the Snapdragon, and that has only been used in about 4 other phones. Yeah, I bet this phone is 500+.

sons you use task killer? i love using third paty apps cause that =free apps.
i tried swype a little bit and its just too different to get used to.

Swype is good for certain things. It's great when you're walking and can't really use both hands to type. Getting used to it takes a while but when you do it's pretty crazy how intelligent the software is and how fast you can type. I'm going to use it for about 50% of my text input.

For those of you who haven't tried the voice recognition, it's also amazingly accurate for texting. in fact i'm using it right now to enter this post.

It's called a point of diminishing returns. The Evo hit that point in my opinion. My friend has it and I finally got to see it today, and that phone is just to big to carry around imo.

O RLY? I was unaware that a phone with specs that are basically the exact same as the EVO suddenly means that it's clearly better. Odd.

I don't get this. The evo fits fine in any pair of pants, slacks, or shorts I own. The dimensional differences between it and the iphone are almost negligible. I can't picture someone liking thee size of the iphone but then having a problem with the evo. It's barely noticeable in my pocket at the worst. I suppose if you wear pants that are painted on your legs, then I could see some problems. Otherwise, I seriously don't understand the criticism. It sounds like a lot of people are grasping for straws for reasons to criticize this device.

Then it becomes a matter of personal preference. I owned a RAZR before I owned an iPhone, and I hate to carry in my pockets (I don't even carry a wallet, I carry a business card holder that's a lot thinner than a wallet) so for me the iPhone 4 being the thinnest smartphone on the planet is good news, but again personal preference.

Couldn't agree more. Personally, the iPhone was already quite bulky, so a thinner version is certainly welcome, and if they somehow can reduce the top and bottom footprint later on, I'll take it too.

This is no knock on the EVO or any of the newer/bigger phones. It's really a matter of preference.

Yes it's considered large by phone standards. Of course you can't compare it to a laptop or a netbook, especially considering they have different uses.

You can compare the iPad with netbooks and laptops. A cell phone is a different type of device really.

You're missing the point. It might be convenient to those who want to carry a netbook or laptop around (same thing with the iPhone, really). But for those wanting to carry just a cellphone, it's a bulky device.

And that's what's also awesome about the iPhone, and that's why you compare them to each other, not to netbooks. You can't compare your device to a device with a 7-10 inch screen, large hard drives, nearly full sized keyboards, etc.

4g vs 3g. They are charging an extra 10 for a much faster connection.

So for me, one who doesn't get 4G probably won't see 4G for awhile, it's for the same Sprint service I already get, right?

Essentially, I'd be paying list for the phone.

Just curious as it is pretty vague.
