Like I said. Wake me up when there's a 7.0. It's no news that California gets earthquakes in the 6's. , we periodically get 5's here in Oregon.

5's just usually feel like quick jolts. In 7's you get that nice swaying motion.

Actually, it depends on the type of earthquake. Magnitude and direction of motion are not coupled.

Thanks for the description, even if its still barely imaginable. How many have you been through? How destructive were they to where you were staying, like the roads, parking lots and place(s) you lived?

It's pretty hard to even imagine, personally. I can sorta "see" how it'd be, but the other bodily sensations of the very ground being shook around elude me.

For all the earthquakes I've been through in California, the worst one I've felt was in Washington State. The Nisqually quake, it was a 6.8, but it was less than 5 miles from where I was living. It felt like it lasted forever, the tires of my car were jumping a foot off the ground. Definitely the scariest one I've been through.

I've never been in a really destructive one. The biggest quake I was in was the Hector quake, which was 7.0 and shook the out of the place, but did minimal damage since the epicenter was about 90 miles east around the Joshua Tree area. The Northridge quake was much worse since its epicenter was in a densely populated area; glad I missed that one.
