Should work well with moderates... I think they enjoy their gov insulting the people who teach their kids. In fact he is actually challenging them to quit.. Great management style, you get much more productivity by threatening and insutling people.
    What insult? What threat?

    story

But borough teacher Rita Wilson, a Kearny resident, argued that if she were paid $3 an hour for the 30 children in her class, she’d be earning $83,000, and she makes nothing near that.

"You’re getting more than that if you include the cost of your benefits," Christie interrupted. [See below link. --Y]

When Wilson, who has a master’s degree, said she was not being compensated for her education and experience, Christie said:

"Well, you know then that you don’t have to do it." Some in the audience applauded.

Christie said he would not have had to impose cuts to education if the teachers union had agreed to his call for a one-year salary freeze and a 1.5 percent increase in employee benefit contributions.

"Your union said that is the greatest assault on public education in the history of the state," Christie said. "That’s why the union has no credibility, stupid statements like that."
According to these School Board minutes, Wilson makes over 86K a year.

I think Christie is on safe and popular ground...

And, oh yeah, he's not up for re-election until 2013. The moderates can't fume for that long and, if New Jersey's fiscal state is better then, this will have been long forgotten except for how it demonstrated his resolve.

I would say so. They work about 1600 hrs a year, right? That's $53.75 per hour.

I am ing sick and tired of people being so ignorant to agree teachers are under paid.

Ok, you do realize that 83,000 is valued differently..say from NJ vs TX. Cost of living is higher in NJ..so would it be fair that teachers, whom teach our children, would be fairly compensated for their good work? Wouldn't paying the good ones be a better investment?

Absolutely. Still, is $53.75 per hr. reasonable or not for teachers pay? I say it too high myself, even in a high cost of living area.
Wouldn't paying the good ones be a better investment?
Absolutely. Merit based pay, but the unions never agree to it.

I guess it depends on what quality of teachers you want teaching your kids. The good ones vs. the cheap ones.

There is a merit system in place now...

31.75 per hr rate. Is that appropriate for good teachers?

OK, New Jersey is slightly more expensive than where I live. I still say that is too much money for such a job. Around $35 per hour would be far more reasonable.

That's low for a good teacher. Maybe for average.

Houston ISD does have a merit pay system. It was met by fierce opposition but in the end the union had to take it.

How much does the merit system have an effect on the salaries, and what is it based on?

So Christy is asking teachers to go one year without getting a raise?

Do teachers automatically get an annual raise? In my line of work, I don't get a raise each year. It pretty much depends on how well the company did and how well I performed.

All I know is that some teachers got nothing and the union raised a stink about it. I will have to plead ignorance on the rest of the system.

I don't think you will find many people disagreeing with the notion that some , if not all, state employees having a wage freeze for year (although it is actualy 2 yrs). The problem lies in the fact that Chrsity decided to insult the teacher for political purposes. Like Yoni mentioned teachers aren't going to vote for cristy anyway so he loses nothing by making an ass of himself. Of course this is red meat for his base and they love it.

I think Christie acquits himself quite nicely in this video and puts the blame where it belongs...the teacher's union.

I'm curious because if the merit system has little effect, teachers have little reason to do better.

He's being accountable to the citizens of New Jersey -- that is his job. As for the crowd demographic, Christie can't make young people attend town hall meetings. I guess he could do like Obama and have a union bus them in for the occasion but, since it's the unions he trying to bust, I'm guessing they wouldn't be much help

He sure knows how to bus in caterers... Obama should genuinely be worried of getting eaten alive if this guy runs for President...
