INSIDE SLANT
Wide receiver Patrick Crayton(notes) ended his boycott and returned to the organized team activities this week in advance of this weekend minicamp.
He said there are no hard feelings and he will give it his all as long as he is on the field and on the team.
But he didn’t back off his wish to be traded or released because of his continued belief that he is not in the Cowboys’ plans next season because his $2 million salary and the drafting of Dez Bryant(notes).
“This is my thing right now. I’m not going to sit here and complain about things I can’t control,” Crayton said. “If I go out there and give it my all and bust my tail and do what I’m capable of doing, I’ll be here. If that’s not the case, when it comes down to it and the numbers get crunched and I’m not here, I don’t know what to tell you. But you’re going to get my all every day.”
Crayton was welcomed back with open arms by his coaches and teammates.
“It’s voluntary. I’m glad he volunteered to come back,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He worked hard and did some good things. That’s what we expect, and I know that’s what he expects of himself. He is going to give you everything he’s got when he’s out there for practice or a game.”
There are no hard feelings between him and receiver Roy Williams, who is at the center of Crayton’s complaints. The two had similar numbers last season, but Williams’ job is guaranteed for next season and Crayton’s isn’t because of Williams’ contract.
The two are good friends so Williams took the opportunity to throw some shots at Crayton and implications that Crayton would beat him out in an open compe ion.
“The old man?” Williams said of the 31-year-old Crayton. “He played back there with Tom Landry, so he knows the drill. It’s good to have him back, good to have him around us.
“Just to have him on the field is big for us. He came in and made some plays. He caught a crossing route, probably would have scored, maybe, if he had some speed. But he just keeps coming in making some plays. He’s a good teammate, one of my best friends on the team, so I’m glad to have him back.”
“I always compete with anybody on the team, especially Patrick,” Williams continued. “Because No. 1, I’m better than him. Two, I’m younger than him. Three, I beat him at everything we do—golf, PlayStation, all those things. So me and him compete in everything.”
Crayton laughed and shook his head when told of Williams’ comments.
He also said he wouldn’t have said it his face. He was smiling then too.
NOTES, QUOTES
Need a reason for the Cowboys’ decision to play hardball with receiver Patrick Crayton’s demands for a trade or a release, look no further than the current situation with rookie receiver Dez Bryant.
Although the first-round draft pick is immensely talented, full of potential and already inserted as one of the top three receivers ahead of Crayton, he has not played football since Sept. 19.
Bryant played three games last season at Oklahoma State before being ruled ineligible by the NCAA for lying to investigators about having dinner with Deion Sanders.
Since being drafted by the Cowboys, Bryant has been plagued by the aches and pains of getting re-acclimated to playing football again.
He was winded and out of shape on his first day of practice at rookie minicamp. He ended rookie minicamp with a twisted ankle. He missed one OTA practice with an upset stomach after having food poisoning. He was also plagued by a sore hip because of the workouts.
He was sidelined again with a tight hamstring that forced him to miss the last three days of OTA practices, but he did get back on the field last Friday.
• Running back Marion Barber(notes) played last season with a torn left quadriceps muscle, running backs coach Skip Peete said. Barber suffered the injury in a Week 2 loss against the New York Giants at Cowboys Stadium.
According to Peete, “He still has a hole in it.”
Barber played the last 13 games with the injury, which generally takes six weeks to heal. Barber missed just one game. Barber was listed on the injury report with a strained quad from weeks three through seven. He was then taken off the injury report until he was put back on with a knee injury in December.
• RB Felix Jones(notes) has heard the talk about him replacing Marion Barber as the starter. He said he doesn’t care either way, as he is used to sharing the load, going back to college with Darren McFadden(notes) at Arkansas. “It’s not about who’s the star or who’s doing this or who’s doing that,” Jones said. “We just come out here working hard, contributing and trying to do the best for our team.”
• The Cowboys gained as many yards as anybody last season. The Saints led the league with 6,461 yards and Dallas was close behind with 6,390. But the area the Cowboys need to improve is scoring points.
The Saints ranked first with 510 points while Dallas was 14th with 361 points.
So one of the team’s focuses in the offseason is improving their red-zone offense.
“There are things that Tony (Romo) and our receivers have done down there that are consistent and we try to do more of those,” coach Wade Phillips said. “(Jason) Witten comes to mind more than anybody. We had been getting it to him a lot in the red zone. We didn’t do it quite as much last year. We shouldn’t have gotten away from that.”
Quote To Note: “My dream is to play in the Super Bowl not the US Open.”—Quarterback Tony Romo(notes) after he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open golf championship.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
• WR Miles Austin(notes) has signed his one-year, $3.168 million restricted free agent tender, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Todd Archer. If Austin hadn’t signed the offer by June 15, the Cowboys could have cut it to $1.65 million.
Medical Watch:
• LB Keith Brooking(notes) returned to practice Friday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery about six weeks ago. “My knee felt better than it’s felt in a really long time, so that’s really positive,” Brooking told reporters at Friday’s minicamp. “The one thing I was concerned about was just explosiveness, having my legs underneath me, because I haven’t done the football, metabolic stuff in so long. But my legs felt great. I felt strong, I felt quick. I was very pleased with the day.”
• WR Dez Bryant returned to practice Friday after feeling soreness in his right hamstring Tuesday.
• NT Jay Ratliff(notes) will return for the final week of OTA practices and will participate in minicamp after spending the bulk of the offseason rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on both elbows.

About time we got one of these
Well i'm actually more excited about this year than any other. We've heard nothing but great things about Dez, however one thing seems to concern me.
It seems like we've gotten way too much hype this year. I've seen us in the top 5 of almost every power ranking and as high up as #2. I'm not sure that one rookie WR changes all that. I mean we got absolutely destroyed 34-3 by the Vikings and all of a sudden we've jumped them and New Orleans as the NFC favorites?
Not to mention we have a ? at the LT position now that Flozell is gone.
Despite all that I'm very optimistic about this year. There's no reason we shouldn't win the division. We can definitely make a superbowl run this year but also we have an infamous history of not living up to the hype.
I still rank us as 3rd in the NFC behind New Orleans and Minnesota (if Favre comes back) to start the season until we prove it on the field
Safety, LT and field goal kicker are the question marks going in to the year.
Although, I do find myself having faith in Free for some reason. I think he will do a good job.
I dont really care about a kicker cause our kicking always sucks, so anything better than terrible is an improvement
There was talk about signing Atogwe but Jerry made it clear recently that its not gonna happen
Hoping the kicking game changes. We're gonna need it this year, I think. If Buehler can kick straight, we may have one of a distance kicker. Atogwe would have been nice. I'm really not comfortable with Ball starting at safety. Sensabaugh is fine..but Ball? Come on...

Cowboys' dream as big as their stadium

IRVING -- The Dallas Cowboys ended minicamp Sunday with a light practice and a family fun day at the team's Valley Ranch training camp headquarters.
They will break for about five weeks before reconvening for training camp in San Antonio to prepare for the 2010 season, one they not only hope but are dreaming will end with another family fun day at home.
Never mind that the Cowboys won their first playoff game in 13 years last season. Forget the conventional talk of focusing first on going one step further than they did a year ago.
With Super Bowl XLV scheduled for Cowboys Stadium in Arlington in February, owner Jerry Jones has made a point to remind anyone and everyone that the party is already planned.
It's just a matter of the Cowboys doing their part to make the dream a reality.
"I know where the Super Bowl is this year and the owner knows where it is," linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. "He lets us know where it is every time he talks to us. Every single time. It's a big thing and it's going to motivate us all season. If you are hosting a Super Bowl at home, why not play in it? But it starts now with minicamp and training camp."
For the Cowboys, it's not just a Jerry Jones thing. It's an "everybody that's associated with the Cowboys" thing.
Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach talked to the team about it during organized team activities (OTAs) a few weeks ago. Former defensive end Charles Haley had a similar message last week.
Linebacker Bradie James said no one wants to forget about the Super Bowl being in Arlington, but added no one could forget if they tried.
"I know where the Super Bowl is," James relented after chiming in with the politically correct goal of trying to go a step further than the Cowboys did last year.
"Of course the owner knows where it is. Charles Haley knows where it is. Roger Staubach knows where it is. Everybody knows where it is. You have to respect his process. But, yes, [it's] in the back of our minds. We know where the Super Bowl is and it would be really nice to play here. We will see what happens."
Said tight end Jason Witten: "I can only imagine what playing in the Super Bowl in general would be like. But in this place, that would just be unbelievable. That is something that would be on the top of the list as far as your experiences as a player. That's what we're all working on and hopefully that will come true for us."
The Cowboys' owner doesn't need to wait to see what happens because when it comes to the Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium, he is like a little kid. He already has played out the scene vividly in his mind. And he wants his players to do the same.
"I don't have any problem with an imagination," Jones said Saturday during minicamp at Cowboys Stadium. "I listened to Charles Haley talk to our team the other day. And the first thing he said when he said come to the field whether it's for a game or practice, you've got to imagine what it is that you want to be. That's first. Then you go out and do the other fundamental things like work.
"As an example, when I was growing up I could play for hours and hours and hours -- just me -- in my yard and play several ball games," Jones said. "So I can really come in here and imagine and make believe and picture this thing and how it's going to be full with all the excitement of a Super Bowl, have it in here. You could dream that something could happen that never happened before. That's worth dreaming on. That's worth acting on, by the way, if you get the opportunity to act on it."

I would have loved Atogwe as sort of our playmaking safety ala Sharper last year, but the guys at C-F seem to think he's overrated and they're all pretty knowledgable, alot more than i am
Saints won't even contend this season. Dumbass Brees had to get on the madden cover.![]()
As for the thead, the Cowboys have the talent to win it all. It just comes down to if it meshes. People also need to quit pointing at that minny loss and look at the strides they made. They played very well down the stretch and they won a playoff game. No reason why they can't take that next step.
hmm...I guess so. but he can't be worse than Alan Ball...not that Ball is horrible, but Atogwe is definitely better.
Hamlin is our backup FS...wish he was the starter...maybe he can earn that spot in the preseason.
I read on DC.com that Hamlin has a shot to take the starting job from Ball. He really performed well in OTA's and the minicamps from what I heard/read. If he continues to perform that way, then I think he really does have a chance to take over the starting position.
As long as he can make it from the 35 on in then I won't have a problem. It kills me to see a kicker miss a chip shot. Folk, Suisham, Gramatica, and whoever else they've had back there really struggled near the end of their time with the Cowboys from the 35 on in. If you can't make that, you don't deserve to be in the NFL.
In a story yet to hit the web, the Enquirer reports that the possessor of reality television’s finest wide receiver is now hooking up with Dallas Cowboys pass catcher Miles Austin.
Kardashian invited Austin to attend an NBA Finals game on June 6, only they didn’t sit together. (Fun!) Though they later did dinner at Casa Vega in Los Angeles.
Excerpt:
“Kim’s carving out more time in her schedule to be with Miles, and she’s telling those close to her that he’s ‘the one.’”
Now for the scary part: (No, no Khloe photos.)
“Her mom, Kris, is hoping Miles is the right guy as well. Kim turns 30 in October, and her mother is pushing for her to get married and start a family before too long.”
For all we know this is yet another planted plot for the Keeping Up With The Harpies reality charade.
But as Austin is a non-sequitur name and there are specific dates and locations in the report, I have a tendency to subscribe to the veracity of the story.

-- Cowboys RB Compe ion --
Wed Jun 16, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
- The Examiner reports the Dallas Cowboys running back battle is getting very compe ive. RB Marion Barber III has dropped about 20 pounds and coaches are saying he looks faster on the field. His biggest compe ion is RB Felix Jones, who coaches said has beefed up. Adding muscle and more meat to Felix Jones' body will add power that he has lacked. This may help him not only break tackles but make him more versatile if for some reason Barber is not playing and the Cowboys need a 2-yard gain for a first down or touchdown. Barber had a tough time occasionally on important short-yardage runs for first downs and touchdowns. But as we learned recently, Barber was playing with a serious quad injury most of the year. Barber could wind up getting 60 percent of the carries this season.
-- Cowboys WR Watch --Dallas Morning News’ Todd Archer believes the Cowboys will keep six wide receivers, including WR Patrick Crayton, this season. The Cowboys are using WR Miles Austin in the slot to make sure they get him away from situations where teams can just bracket him and follow him all over the place. “And if they do, then they’ll be screwed by all the other guys they have on the field. So, I think for WR Dez Bryant, you just want to have him come in and just learn one thing: maybe both outside spots as opposed to the inside where you have to read so much stuff and be on the same page. That’s why I still think WR Patrick Crayton is still going to be around here. Maybe I’m in the minority on that one but I still think they’re keeping six wideouts. But, I think Miles’ experience, his knowing the system and his explosiveness in the slot helps him, and I think for Dez, it is better just to put him on one side so he can learn it first as opposed to having to learn all these other spots. As we found out this week, there is a lot of stuff these guys need to know.” Crayton won’t be given a fair opportunity to battle for the No. 3 wide receiver spot. “Is it going to be a fair fight? No and Patrick knows it. He’s going to have to knock out the champ, so to speak, to get on the field. And even at that, he can’t just out-point the guy, he’s going to have to knock him out. So, I don’t know if he’s going to have a fair chance to do it but I know there’s going to be situations this year where he’s going to win a game or two for the Cowboys because of his relationship with QB Tony Romo, because of the connection they have and because he always seems to make a couple of plays that win games. Think of the Washington game where Romo is running around and he knows where to go and Tony finds him. They don’t have another receiver…Miles is a little bit like that but even not as much as Patrick is, in terms of finding that open spot and knowing what the quarterback is thinking at the same time. So, that’s kind of why I think Patrick is here, but I think…is he going to be the No. 3? I don’t think he would be. But you know what? This could be a redshirt year. And then, if WR Roy Williams doesn’t play well this year, then they’ll have Patrick again next year to get into that third role.
