Dude, they more or less had the game against Indy wrapped up last year and that game was in Indy. If Bell Belichick doesn't royally up managing timeouts/challenges/punting on 4th and 2 New England wins the game. They for all intensive purposes outplayed Indy. The defense fell apart against Indy because of how much it was on the field in the 2nd half, it was fatigued as .

That could all be true. Then we could also make excuses on Indy's side, people could say they made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes, etc... just like Bill did. Fact is, Pats lost. The bigger issue from that game, is that they made the seemingly dumb mistake, because they were scared less of Peyton Manning. You could see it in Bill eyes too, the dude knew that if Manning got the ball whether by punting or a turnover, the Colts would win. The only way the Pats would have won is by simply keeping the Colts from getting the ball.

Either way, the purpose of this is not to bash the Pats for losing that game. But pointing to the fact that their defense could not hold down the fort when relied upon, and their own coach knew it. And the defense being tired is not a great excuse here, because if it was the 02-04 Patriots defense, there is no question about it, that Bill punts that ball, because he would have trusted that defense far more, whether they were tired or not.

tbh DoK I'm kinda surprised you think Brady doesn't have passing weapons outside of Moss/Welker.....have you forgotten we now have Rob "I'm a bad mother er" Gronkowski?

also, Hernandez is going to beast too. Gronk/Hernandez will be the killer TE duo that Dallas would have if Martellus Bennett ever puts as much effort into football as he does his YouTube videos.

I was talking about last year, this year he will have those guys to throw to, I'm looking forward to them utilizing the TE position and having 2 TE formations a lot more like they did when they were winning superbowls.

Also Fatass Crumpler will be good as a blocking tight end since he's fat, Gronk didn't get to block much in college but he certainly has the size to so those two won't be liabilities in that area.

The biggest problem last season was that Belichick gambled and lost that 1) the team could survive without Seymour and that 2) Derrick Burgess could fill that pass rushing hole. Not having Vrabel/Bruschi/Seymour in the locker room was also huge.

In the end it was worth it because Belichick probably knew before the season that Brady and the defense were another year or two away from being real contenders, so trading Seymour for a future 1st rounder was a better long term move.

The defense has so much youth that it still might be another year from really coming together. But there's so much damn talent that they're going to be beastly when it all comes together. Mayo and Meriweather appear to have matured alot in terms of both of them saying they want to be the new leaders of the defense, I think Brandon es could be that type of locker room guy too, as long as he's not trying to gouge anyone's eyes out.

The Saints benefited from a Manning/Wayne chokejob more than anything.

The Steelers and Cardinals both scored on each other late in the 4th quarter. Same with the Giants and Patriots.

It's an offensive league now and in a big game with elite players, the offense is going to win that battle 90% of the time, regardless of how good the defense is. If an offense fails in crunch time of the SB, it's almost always an offensive screwup rather than great defense.

The Patriots lost but they were more than capable of winning that game, it's not like they were playing a team they were incapable of beating. I'm not trying to say they didn't lose, I'm saying they could have just as easily beaten the Colts with the team they had.

And as far as I'm concerned, that 02-04 hypothetical is unrealistic. The Patriots had a ball control offense back then and the defense woulda never been gassed like it was last year when the offense went into 3 & out mode. You're probably right BB woulda punted the ball with that team, but that team woulda never put him in such a ty position.

And even when the defense does play great, some got will catch a football with his helmet and the coaching staff will be so dumbfounded that they won't realize Ellis Hobbs is isolated against a guy 2 feet taller than him.

The Saints didn't do anything great defensively, they benefited from Reggie Wayne forgetting how to run a route properly. You or I could have made that interception, it was so gift-wrapped.

and tbh Brady was the worst player on the field in that playoff game. The Ravens didn't put out some elite defensive effort. The Ravens obviously were good, but that loss is almost completely on Brady imo.

And I pretty much agree with this. However, I don't think that the Pats have enough offense to outscore a team like the Colts. The only way they are going to beat high powered offensive teams like the Colts or Saints, is to get stops early in the game to put them in position to win the game late, the same way the Giants did to the Pats in 07. Giants obviously had no chance in at outscoring the Pats, but instead, they played strong defense early to give them a shot at the win in the 4th, and it worked out. Same for the Steelers against the Cardinals... no way would the Steelers outscore the Cardinals, but they got enough stops on them early in the game, that they were able to pull it out in the 4th.

And tbh mono has a point, there really aren't any teams in the NFL known for their great shut down 2 minute defense. With all the spread formations and in today's game, it's harder for defenses to shut down great offenses when they go into their 4 receiver, no huddle 2 minute drill.

This is why depth at corner or lack thereof has killed a lot of teams recently, the Cardinals and Patriots come to mind. The Saints might not have had any shut down corners but Greer, Porter, Gay and Jenkins are all guys who won't give up big plays and can be on the field during critical times.
