Just as an FYI to anyone interested, I'm going to give 4G a serious test on Friday.

I'm going to be streaming the USA - Slovenia match via ESPN through my phone to my laptop to watch the game.

It shouldn't push the 4G speed to the limit, but it will definitely be a test of it's consistency for mass data over a large amount of time.

I'm just glad I have unlimited data.

you can replace any iPhone glass outside of the iPhone 4 for $20 or so. now the LCD and the glass are fused, so doubt that works.

There are levels of replaceability. As far as I know, the screen in the iPhones have literally been enclosed in the casing. Pulling it off means jerking the guts of the phone out.

From what I read, the Evo's screen is independent of the internal components and may even be user-swappable.

Well, it does to a point. But it also chugs the processor to force close so many apps, as many of them are set to just cache in the background -- where they don't use much battery or processor. I was using it far too judiciously, and all the forcing closed of programs which would later reopen were really destroying my battery life, not to mention leaving it open meant it was essentially like having a task manager left open on a phone that constantly monitors everything. Now if I use it, I let it kill itself as well.

With moderate usage today, it's been unplugged for 7 hours exactly now, and I still have 68% battery. I'm fairly certain I could go for 24+ hours without recharging, even with moderate use. Pretty awesome. Disabling most of my live updates helped as well. The battery life went from "OK" to "excellent" in literally one day.
I have a motorola backflip, and I had a similar issue with it seeming to drain a lot of my battery. But what I did was turn Auto Kill on, and have it set to "crazy" and to work every time my screen turns off. then I set the security level to "low" and i put any apps that are constantly in use by my phone on the ignore list. this has actually helped my battery life significantly, and helps keep lots of memory available. so now i almost never have to even use the app manually. i have friend who has an Evo, and i did the same thing for him, and he said it made a big difference as well.

    Not bad advice.

However, I'm getting such good battery life out of my Evo right now that I don't need to take any additional steps to boost life. With tweaking, I think this might be the best battery life I've had in a phone since the dumbphone days. Pretty amazing.

Yeah I feel ya. Although with the Evo, its so fast and has great memory, so its not as neccesary to keep memory open as it is with mine. I'm still running Android 1.5, waiting on the upgrade. I probably should just root it though, eh?

this thread makes me want a damn Evo but considering the 3g coverage here is spotty at best thinking about 4g is laughable.

Well that and I can't really afford to drop that much on a phone right now

What service do you have now?

I pay $79.99 a month for EVERYTHING from Sprint (including unlimited mobile to mobile minutes, which is excellent). I think SA is one of the cities next on the list to switch over to 4G, also.

I'm not in SA any longer. I have one of the data everything plans but now I'm in Santa Fe, NM and there isn't any 4G coverage in the state. I commute to ABQ several times a week but the train, buses, and university all have wifi coverage so my laptop works fine.

Its the actual phone cost that would kill me. I just upgraded a few months back so I would have to pay full price for the Evo.

Well, you could always sell that phone on eBay and use the cash from it to cut down on the Evo's cost a bit. Just an idea.

I thought SA already had 4G? Sprint uses Clearwires 4G network and we have that here.

    Where are you located CH?

    Washington D.C.

And yeah, I thought SA had it already.

On the xda developers forum, a user there got 6+ mbps on the Evo. Pretty insane.

Does Sprint still put a data cap at 5gb for 3g use on the Evo? I'm assuming 4g is unlimited.

    Nope.

The cap is only for their mobile broadband card. 3G with the phone is unlimited.

Just to clarify for Manny, 3g for any phone is unlimited with sprint. I have a hero.

I streamed for a few minutes earlier with the 4g and it was almost flawless.

Almost. There was some lag but it wasn't very distracting.

I had a couple of brief periods of lag, but I think most of that was from the client I was using, not the connection.

Watching England - Algeria now. There has been absolutely NO lag throughout this entire match.

Say what you want about 4G. It's the real deal IMO. This connection is amazingly consistent.
