Stern has some thinking to do this summer. Would it be good for the NBA to be dominating the NBA? I think Stern might jump ship.

I'd say that dynasties are only good for a few years, a decade at best. If a winner looks predetermined, what's the point of watching?

The NBA was far and away less popular than baseball at that point. Now it's close

Watching Michael Jordan and the Bulls dominate the NBA was awesome and special, after the Bulls dynasty ended it was cool to see a new team win the NBA le, than the Lakers with Shaq/Kobe dominated the NBA for 3 consecutive years and it seemed they were this unstoppable force, but it also made things predictable in a way. When the Spurs knocked LA off in 2003 and went on to win the NBA le again it was exciting, same in 2004 when the Pistons beat the Lakers. Than the Spurs had the exciting 7 game series against the Pistons. Shaq traded to Miami and beats Dallas to win it all, a new team. Than the Spurs prove everyone wrong and beat the Cavaliers in 2007, that was fun. The Celtics/Lakers series in 2008 was a great series, it stopped there. The 2009 NBA finals it was obvious Orlando could not beat the Lakers and in 2010 the Lakers had more experience and homecourt, again predictable. However unlike the Lakers 3peat team with Kobe/Shaq this Lakers team seems beatable so I think they have to be the favorites to win it all in 2011, but my vibe is they can be beat, the rest of the NBA hasn't caught up with them yet but it always happens. No fix, just a talented, deep team dominating the NBA once again. The Spurs were talented and deep but Duncan never had Gasol, Bynum and Artest to help him like Kobe does.

I'm hoping for new blood this year. Boston is done, but someone in the west needs to step up to stop LA. I'm tired of seeing that babied franchise cruise along. There needs to be another big trade in the west to cancel them out. Portland seems like the team that would have their number. Interestingly look at the current team payrolls....

No surprise who's at the top.

So, say for instance, Vug misses those two fts, KG grabs the rebound dribbles past Perkins on crutches to just this side of half court and heaves in a three to win it, is Boston still done?

It's actually a rare thing that the Lakers are at the very top. For example, 6th in 2000-01, 13th in 2001-02 season, 6th in 2002-03, 10th in 2004-05. 3rd in 2006-07, but no complaints because the team wasn't winning. 9th at the start of 2007-08.

True, but LA is now having to spend a lot to hold the current team together and there's beginning to be some significant separation from the rest of the teams. but as long as they go deep in the playoffs, with the current system, they'll still make boatloads of money and be able to afford to keep this team in tact. While other teams that get booted earlier or live in poorer markets won't be able to afford to compete.

Taking this into account, portland seems like the team best positioned financially to take them on with the talent they have until they have to pay Oden the big money assuming he ever is healthy.
