Kloses father is german, his mother is polish. And he was born in a former german territory.
Podolskis parents are both polish, he was also born in a former german territory, his parents emigrated to Germany when he was 2 years old. So it's no surprise that he sees germany as it's homecountry.
With Cacau you're right and even I don't understand why he plays for the german team. He didn't grow up in germany, has no german origin, but he got the german citizenship in 2009.

All of them, except Cacau, were born in Germany or grew up here. it's just a refelction of our society - Germany is a country of Immigration.

i didnt mean to single out germany with my comment, but its clear that more european teams nationalize players than south american teams. We can get all technical with motives, borders, mixed parents etc etc but bottom line you'll be lucky to find 10 examples, of whichever composition, in all south american teams' history, vs several examples of whichever composition in EACH WC for european teams.
Perhaps your right and the european nationalteams are more "international" than the south american teams. But as I pointed out in most cases it has nothing to do with searching for good players and give them a german passport. Most of the players are born in Germany. So they are germans although their parents are turkish, spanish or whatever.
And players with mixed parents have to make their decision for one country. Some take the country they live in and grew up, like Özil for Germany, Montolivio for Italy and so on. Some players take the homecountry of their fathers, like Kevin Boateng and Ghana or Nuri Sahin and Turkey, - or Lucas Barrios for Paraguay.
For other countries like England or France you have to keep in mind the historical background with all their former colonies.
It's not only the fact of being born in Upper Silesia (Gliwice for Podolski and Opole for Klose), but also in both cases the parents belonged to the German minority within that particular area. That's why the parents got the status as so called resettlers ("Aussiedler") after their emigration to Germany.
I have massive respect for Germany (overall... the country, citizens, culture, team, everything). Their team always plays hard, they don't foul much, and is always very well organized. I'm sure they're going to give Argentina a tough match.
yes, and many times they choose the nationality of the team where they have the better chance to play, and sometimes where they have the better chance to win. if i'm not mistaken podolski and klose's parents were athletes that represented poland internationally, which is why I assumed they are both 100% polish. I already said its the players/agents that are behind this, not the federations.
in any case my point stands- european teams are strengthened by nationalized players, otherwise they wouldn't be called up.
also, I will echo elnono, i have tons of respect for the german NT. it seems like they always make at least semis, many times without well known players- that speaks volumes about their depth, understanding of the game, toughness and commitment. also, a lot of respect for brehme for admitting the foul didnt exist in the 90 wc

Everybody saw that it wasn't a penalty. But to be fair - there was a situation before where the ref should have given a penalty. But it's 20 years ago and i think the better team won that time.
BTW - my prediction for champion before the WC started: Argentina ;-)

I say 60:40 chances for Argentina. Their defense (Demi) is always good to it up (watched too many Bayern games last year), same with the german.
Argentinas offense has the bigger names but everything can happen (just remember spain-switzerland) and germany has the quality to punish every small mistake.

The foul on Augenthaler should have been the real penalty. I remember whole Argentina talking about how the ref "stole" their cup. Germany was better in this game, i hope finally 20 years later most of the ppl in argentina realized it too
