Sincere congrats to the Lakers being the NBA Champions. It's a big acheivement. Unfortunately in October some other team will be named the World Champion.
tbh if Cuban makes a "World Champions" banner after the Mavs win a le, I'd be as embarrassed as all Laker Fans should be when they see that on their banners.
Key word is "should" because Laker fans are shameless and embrace a completely unfounded and undeserved le like "World Champions"

David Stern has so little faith in the Lakers that he refuses to let them compete for the opportunity to be known as the best basketball club on earth.
Maybe because the Lakers and Celtics are global names, while the Mavs ... err ... are not.
Guarantee that if someone else won the le, this thread wouldn't exist.
Nice Maniac Mansion avatar, btw Mono...
I say, send the Lakers to take on the FIBA "World" Champions...
If the Celtics won it, yes it would exist. Those dumbasses put "World Champion" on their banners too.
What the does that matter? Are you really this obtuse?
Global recognition doesn't mean . This is about earning the le "World Champion". Winning in the NBA doesn't earn you that distinction.
Hmm...
Here's a few other examples of the misuse of "World Champions..."

please link us the thread in 2008 about the celtics getting hated cuz they were called "World champions".
link me to the thread where it happened in 09 to the Lakers
just cuz I made one this year doesn't mean you need to get so asshurt about it. This applies to any team that calls themselves World Champion.
Would the Lakers beat the US NT? I don't think so. I also think they wouldn't beat Spain. and maybe some other teams.
you DID say that the celtics would have one...i just want to see it.
Pretty much any team that made the playoffs this year would stomp on any of the national teams(not including the U.S one, of course).
American football doesn't apply. American football isn't an international game, it's an American game that has a small following elsewhere. Calling the NFL champion the World Champion isn't nearly as egregious as in the NBA, because basketball is an international game.
I wouldn't object to an Australian rules football team in Australia calling themselves World Champions either.
In an international game like basketball, it's another story completely. Just like it's stupid to call the Yankees world champions. Baseball is played better outside of the US anyways.
Are you ing re ed? I said if they won it, they would have one. They didn't win it.
Do you realize that the FIBA World Club Championship didn't exist in 2008? Do you expect me to invent a time machine and convince FIBA to start this tournament two years ago so that you can be satisfied with a Boston related WC thread thread in 2008? Are you seriously this ing stupid?
Spain would beat just about every NBA team. They almost beat the US team.
And you know this how? By the stomp that the US team gave to Spain? compare the Spanish NT with the Lakers roster and tell me how can you come up with the idea that the Lakers would stump Spain?
Sons we're not talking about a bunch of players put together and given a few months to practice. We're talking about teams that have been playing for YEARS together.
Mavs almost won a ring in 2006![]()
If Spain gets Gasol, they curbstomp the Lakers.
If the Lakers get Gasol, it's a close game that could go either way.
Wait, is Spain a club? Wouldn't it be Barcelona vs. the Lakers? Or am I missing the actual make-up of the FIBA World Club Championiship?
Someone else mentioned National teams vs NBA teams. the Spanish NT cannot participate in a club championship.
Gotcha. It would be awesome to see the NBA Champ take on the Club champs from around the world. It would be like what they have in futbol. I'm definitely all for that.
This is insane.
If there really was a world championship then Lakers would play Barcelona only if they both made the finals. They would have to beat South American and Asian/Australian champions first.
Anyway, a big problem with the idea of this is that for example Barcelona is "Euroleague champions" but they are not even the best team in Spain. The were swept 3-0 in the Spanish League playoffs by Baskonia.
So they are not actually a real Euroleague champion. I think it only works for teams that won the triple crown in Europe. Otherwise you have the second best team in Spain trying to claim they are "world champions". Would not make sense.
So you would have to leave this off unless a European team won everything.
Remember Euroleague is single elimination tournament. It is not a series of playoffs like a domestic league. So the champions of Spanish League like Baskonia and Greek League like Panathinaikos are much closer to be a real European club champion than Barcelona is.
I think it should be the league champions where they play a real full season and playoffs from the elite leagues of Spain and Greece. Have those teams play each other like Baskonia vs Panathinaikos would be the example from this year and the winner could represent Europe.
Euroleague champion is not a good representation because the best team in Europe many often times does not win that because of the single elimination.
