According to the nydailynews.com, the San Antonio Spurs could have a deal to re-sign Richard Jefferson for five years:

Clearly, there’s a side deal in place to re-sign him ($45M over five years) that starts at $7M. That allows San Antonio to get under the luxury tax and save roughly $20M, the $8M lopped off his original deal (doubled) and the $3M-to-$4M the team figures to pocket from the equally divided loot paid by the teams over the luxury tax.

Got to like the Spurs getting some financial relief if this report is true but not liking five more years of Jefferson in a Spurs uniform.

He is a tradeable asset and a decent, if not good, wing player. If there is not a trade in the works, I would be interested in knowing what the trade clause(s) are in his new contract.

Vecsey can't even do basic math. The biggest raise a team could offer is 10.5% (re-signing own free agent). A 5-year deal starting at $7M would look like this:

    Year 1: 7,000,000
    Year 2: 7,735,000
    Year 3: 8,470,000
    Year 4: 9,205,000
    Year 5: 9,940,000
    Total: 42,350,000

RJ could easily get much more than that.

    Don't flatter yourself.

5/45 for RJ is ridiculous. Unless it's another team offering it. Then I'm all for it as long as it's a sign-and-trade.

Well I hope there is some truth to this because RJ is probably the best wing player the Spurs would be able to get. Plus if it is around 7 mil a year that would be a steal especially seeing how this free agent season is going!

Easily? Doubt it. How many teams are going to be willing to dip into their cap space to offer a 30 year old past his athletic prime more than a 5 year 40+ million dollar deal?
All it takes is one. I'm still putting my money on him getting 4 years, $40 million.

Now I agree with the 7 mil part somewhat; I'd take RJ for 3 years/$21M. However, RJ is going to want as many years as possible given the uncertainty concerning the new CBA.

Also, a contract starting at $7M and a contract averaging $7M get more different the more years you add.

If LBJ stays with Cleveland, do you guys think this will make RJ more of a target for the Nets?

If year number 5 of that deal was a team option, i'd be okay with it.

Wow...I'm surprised you say that. I think 5 years is definitely too many (unless the last one was fully unguaranteed or a team option), and I'd even balk at 4 unless the money was small enough ($30M or less).

If it were possible for the Spurs to get Splitter without having to use their MLE on him then I'd feel differently. But, the situation is what it is. Even as a bad fit, RJ is still a legitimate NBA talent and last year the Spurs didn't have nearly enough legitimate NBA talent on the roster to compete for a championship.

S&T using RJ is still an option, but I don't think the odds of being able to land someone better than RJ are that good. If you're a team who has a better SF than RJ, you're not going to be interested in RJ. Plus, RJ has absolute veto power over all of this because he's got to want to go to whatever team you want to S&T him to.

There are so many dominoes that could fall, or not fall, today and tomorrow. Who knows what results from just the Wade/Bosh decision to go to Miami? Who could really know at this stage just what the Spurs are posiitioned to do with regard to RJ? For example, if the Spurs are sitting there waiting on a Chicago or a NJ, everything changes or goes kerplop within a matter of hours.
