He's SF depth. Nothing more.
And if Jefferson doesn't sign and the Spurs don't get who they want with the LLE...
then yes, i'd expect Bonner to start, alongside TD and Splitter, with Tony and Hill.
Not happy. Not surprised.

The FO just finished their collective descent into insanity. I'm ready to accept the spurs as a 'mediocre at best' team. Can't wait till the pop era is over. Hopefully he keeps to his word and retires in 2012. Bonner will only have 2 years left on his contract by then! Oh, optimism. Cruel, cruel optimism.
You forgot to use blue wording.
He doesn't spread the floor, or makes threes. We played just fine without him while he was injured last season, and Dice and his jumper can play spread the floor just as well and also grab rebounds and defend people.
This guy is literally a paperweight robbing other players their minutes. , I don't even think he ended up with as positive plus/minus the last playoffs. There's just no excuse.
Spurs have defense and rebounding with Splitter, Dice and Blair...also role players filling a role for the team. We'd all love to have one big man next to Tim (or backing him up) that does it all...but for the money the Spurs have available, they ain't getting it.
I knew this was going to happen, but I thought it would be very low on the list of priorities.
!!
Too many years and too much money. Horrible contract
Where's Splitter and where's the SF???? They should be the priority not ing Bonner
Go take a look at Joe Johnson's contract and tell me we didn't save money.
Just please, you got your wish, be quiet now.![]()
Pop's quest to search for the ghost of Robert Horry continues...
The Spurs don't need a soft PF who is a one-trick pony who forgets his trick when the games start to matter. They need bigs who can rebound, defend, and get high percentage looks inside. That skillset of Bonner's is hugely detrimental to the success of the Spurs. It worked with Horry because he was also a phenomenal defensive player with a basketball IQ that was off the charts.
So what's the point of tossing stupid money at a guy that doesn't do anything next to Tim?
I'll wait until I see more official numbers before I overreact, but at first glance the deal seems fairly un-Spurs-like. I could see giving Bonner a slight raise, or I could see giving him 4 years, but not both. (That is, I could have easily seen 2 years, $7 million, or 4 years, $11 million.)
I've said before, I have no problem bringing back Bonner if he's going to be the 5th big. However, at that price, either you're going to be playing him more than 5th big minutes, or you're going to be overpaying for someone at the end of the bench. As much as I like Bonner, either situation is unacceptable for a team trying to compete for a championship while going into uncertain financial times.
This is it... and some people here think Matty can fill those shoes... a 3 year sample is not enough, I guess..
It's probably no more than $4M per season. They didn't just give him "big 3" type money, and money doesn't determine PT for the Spurs...just ask Jefferson.
no
and yes, Manu would have gotten very overpaid as a FA this summer, which is why we should have traded him, and which is why we need to trade TP
I wouldn't say he's at the helm.
It disgusts me that this dumbass is going to be taking Blair's minutes again this season.
Bonner has been stealing minutes for 3 years now...why would Popa- stop feeding him now that his salary is higher?
LOL... RJ played on 81 games and averaged 31.1 mpg...
Popa-
:facepalm
(shaking head) This retort has no logic at all.
First, do you really think Popovich and the Spurs are going to give someone a raise and long-term deal to ride the pine? Someone who they know exactly what they're getting from and what to expect? Like he's going to say,"Hey, let's get Holt to open up the pocketbook some more so I can have Bonner on the bench to discuss the type of sandwich I should be eating with my A-Z!"
Second, since when is a reasonable offer a pay-raise? That's sounds more than reasonable for a player that hasn't improved the bottom line -- winning -- with his presence. He's made it quite clear that he's a bench player that is much more of a luxury than necessity, so why would it be reasonable to give him a raise and long-term extension? Logical thinking would assume it's because the Spurs value him and expect to play him -- likely, again, more than his abilities should warrant.
Lots of contending NBA teams don't rely on a Matt Bonner to help them contend. Basically all of them.
And for his usefulness should have been averaging at most 20 MPG. We would have been better off developing a platoon system of D-league talent than what Jefferson actually brought to the table last year...
Sneed just twittered. He's reconsidering retirement.
