It's true though. There are a # of teams who would have payed the same to have Bonner on their squad. whether or not that justifies us signing him is a different story, but he would have got this contract elsewhere if he didn't get it here. TBH I could care less if he was here or not assuming Splitter is still coming over.

Wow. This is horrible news. I would rather be slightly below-average without him, than average and a second round exit with him. I'm not saying that'll automatically happen, but this guy for a "power forward" provides nothing of note.... Lazy management.

The classic end to the Bonner era would be to use Splitter's rights to salary dump Bonner's contract.
    scary scary

And if Spurs have truly spend more than $12M on Bonner, they have no excuses not to offer the full MLE to Splitter if it what it takes to get him or a max extension to Parker.

When you waste that much money on Bonner, there are no legit financial excuses.
    Couldnt agree more.

The Spurs don't need a soft PF who is a one-trick pony who forgets his trick when the games start to matter. They need bigs who can rebound, defend, and get high percentage looks inside. That skillset of Bonner's is hugely detrimental to the success of the Spurs. It worked with Horry because he was also a phenomenal defensive player with a basketball IQ that was off the charts.

Disagree about the skill-set being detrimental. The success of Pop's offensive system is heavily reliant on spacing. I mean, how many times did we say that RJ absolutely killed the Spurs because he wasn't in the right place or couldn't make the shots when he was in the right place. Bonner provides the spacing for Tim, Tony and Manu to operate in the paint. And he converts on a greater majority of those shots than any other Spur.

Am I thrilled about his performance in playoff situations...no it kills me. But, don't delude yourself into thinking the Spurs would fill out a roster without having that skill-set included. So, if not Bonner then who for the money they had available?

But it is detrimental, the guy can't shoot in the playoffs. What good is relying on someone who can't provide? I'd be as much use to the Spurs as Bonner in the postseason.

Bonner provides no spacing because he can't hit an important shot, and the opportunity cost of having a big on the floor who can grab a board and not get torched every possession is a of a steep price to pay for all those missed shots. Bonner is dog and we all stepped in it.

So what's the point of tossing stupid money at a guy that doesn't do anything next to Tim?
Spaces the floor and converts a greater amount of the shots when he gets them than any other Spur.

Brian cook just got a 2 year 2.5 million contract - perhaps something in that range would have been more appropriate.

This is the worst cop out that has been here since Horry retired.

Did DRob provide spacing with his 3 point shot?
Did Rasho provide spacing with his 3 point shot?
Did Nazr provide spacing with his 3 point shot?

The system is not built exclusively with the 4 providing spacing.

But he doesn't. Not when it matters, he doesn't. Not only that, he completely murders our interior defense.

Those 3 could probably shoot 3's better than Bonner in the playoffs.

RC and Pop are probably on the phone with him now for the MLE...
