ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have acquired pitcher Cliff Lee from the Mariners on Friday for first baseman Justin Smoak, pitcher Blake Beavan, Double-A Frisco reliever Josh Lueke and second baseman/outfielder Matt Lawson.

    • Deadline MLBlog
    • Full coverage
The Rangers have scheduled a 5 p.m. CT news conference at the Ballpark in Arlington.

Lee could start for the Rangers as early as Saturday against the Orioles. He was scheduled to pitch on Friday against the Yankees at Safeco Field.

The Yankees and the Mariners were close to a deal this morning that would have sent Lee to New York for Minor League catcher Jesus Montero, infielder David Adams and a third prospect, but the trade fell through. That allowed the Rangers to move aggressively with Lee.

Lee is 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts for the Mariners. Chris Davis is expected to be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Smoak.

Smoak was the Rangers' No. 1 Draft pick in 2008. He is currently hitting .209 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 70 games for Texas.

Beavan is 10-5 with a 2.78 ERA in 110 innings for the Frisco RoughRiders this season. He's given up 37 runs (34 of which were earned) on 100 hits with 12 walks and 68 strikeouts.

He was the Rangers' 2007 first-round Draft pick with the 17th overall selection

This is pretty awesome. Reminds me of the Astros getting Randy Johnson in '98.

If he comes here and performs as expected I'm sure extending him will be Rangers new owner with money priority 1.

This gives the Rangers just about as good of a 1-4 punch as anyone with Lee, CJ, Hunter, and Cobra. I wonder who the number 5 will be? Will they stick with the underperforming Feldman or go Dutch Oven or Harden when they're back?

Ok, I have GOT to go to tomorrow's game. Not only because that will probably be Lee's first start. But it's also Michael Young's ceremony for being the hits leader. Talk about a hot ticket.

I hope its the Dutch Oven, he really needs to get his head out of his ass.

Feldman just doesn't have the stuff to be a quality starter imo. Last year was a fluke and i think he would be better served as a long relief kind of guy.

    Harden can go die

Start collecting your nickels and dimes, Wash just said that since Lee's scheduled start was today he'll be throwing tomorrow as the starter with that "T" on his hat.

I'm thinking Dutch Oven too and if he can get it together this could be a very successful 2nd half. What's the status on Harrison? He looked good in spurts but I don't know how close he is to returning

Yep and it makes perfect sense anyway since tomorrow is the open spot in our rotation. We are subs uting Cliff Lee for Matt Harrison.

That is a bull error on Young. No doubt that the error should go to Arias all the way. At some point the first baseman has to be the one responsible with balls in the dirt. That was a routine scoop that should have been made. Any regular first baseman would have made that play.

The exuberance I have seeing Lee dominate will be tempered a bit watching Mr Strike Out playing 1st again. I wish JD could follow this up with a move for a legit 1B. Maybe see what Washington would take for Adam Dunn.
