Report: Tiago Splitter finally coming to the NBA, agrees to terms with Spurs
Fri Jul 09,2010 6:45 PM ET By Rob Mahoney
Tiago Splitter may not be but a blip on the average NBA fan's radar, but he's about to step into one of the finest organizations in the sport with the potential to make a huge impact. After much delay, Splitter will finally join the Spurs, according to a report by The Ticket 760 in San Antonio, giving Tim Duncan a proper big man running mate for the first time in a long while.

Even if Splitter doesn't quite make headlines in the LeBron aftermath, this is a huge signing for the Spurs. Antonio McDyess' season wasn't all that productive, and as impressive as DeJuan Blair may be, he was never the ideal candidate for a full-time gig at Duncan's side. Tiago's perfect for the job, and so much a stylistic fit for the Spurs that it's sickening.

Splitter's signing may not be earth-shaking, but it does have legitimate implications for the rest of the conference. Maybe the rest of the West's second-tier teams won't be goaded into making reactionary moves in the coming days, but the stability and depth the Spurs just picked up mandates their inclusion in any NBA outlook. Gregg Popovich's big three may have one more run in them yet, and with Splitter, Blair, an emerging George Hill, and possibly another acquisition in tow, San Antonio has quietly created a team reminiscent of their le-winning roots.

    Personnel-wise, all this sounds great.

But Popovich is still our coach.

This dude better be as good as all the hype, and he better start goddamnit. Dice and Blair off the bench, Bonner for insurance situational lineups.

    Temper the expectations a tad.

He will start on the bench but if he proves to be as good as advertised he will eventually start.

I like Dice and Blair together that being said however.

(I'd imaging the organization wants to throw a press conference with him when he gets in town...so scheduling blah blah blah).
Will the press conference be in honor of the kids? I sure hope so.

I don't want LeBron getting all the attention.

cuz that's what people do here when a player they have high hopes for sucks. they go blame it on pop for either not giving him minutes or destroying confidence. and no...i'm actually amused.
I agree with you. Too may in here think Splitter is going to be a star and put the spurs over the top.
White bigs often disappoint, lack quickness and leaping abilty and are busts when they get to the NBA see Darko.

Dice is over the hill and both he and blair are not centers. Splitter better be good for all the hyped up talk.

I saw highlights of him. It is a joke of a league he was going against inferior players when compared to what he will be seeing in the NBA. He was dunking on guys 6 inches or more shorter than he was.

TBH, the way we've been playing defense the last couple of seasons, he might have a point...

    ok, maybe not.

Though terms of Splitter’s NBA deal may be near completion, there remains one significant hurdle to clear before a deal to bring the 6-foot-11 Brazilian center to San Antonio can be finalized.

The Spurs must first negotiate a buyout of Splitter’s contract with Caja Laboral, Splitter’s Spanish League club, a caveat that could hold up an announcement. There are signs a deal could be completed early next week, and there are reasons for both the Spurs and Splitter to want to get something done quickly.

Splitter has until June 15 to opt out of his deal with Caja Laboral, or else he remains committed to that team for two more seasons.
Uh, I thought Splitter didn't have a buyout this year if he went to an NBA team. At most, I thought it was a small set amount. WTF?

See, this is why you don't celebrate Splitter coming until the ink is dry

My expectation of him coming in.

    - pick n roll on offense
    - added length and able to guard the perimeter better than our old guys
    - rebounds
    - has passing ability in the post.

I'll try to look it up, but I think the buyout was merely a formality. Sure, it could take a day or two to clear with the Spanish league and what not, but I don't think it's going to be a problem if Splitter wants to come over.

If there was a buyout clause i thought it was something under a million dollars. like a 500k buyout to come over. I don't recall where I saw/read this.

Is it realistic to think he will be as good or better thanarc gasol was his rookie year?
