I was expecting more of a burn here, but I guess not. I say one thing about Chandler, you respond with lol Yao and such. The best moves are to WAIT to seek the best deal possible. Like LeBron never considered Dallas, Bosh never considered Houston. That's ok though, speculating makes it interesting. Obviously, yes getting a healthy Yao would be ideal, but we know it's not going to happen. So, what do you do now? Seek insurance, play him less, and so forth. You can lol all you want, Chandler is every bit as injury prone as Yao is

Yao still would be hurt, and so would Prince
While true, the fate of the mavs season doesnt rest on if Chandler is healthy or not, they will still win 50-55 games. Now if yao goes down, Rockets will find themselves in the lottery
Well it could be worse, the Mavs could have signed Shaq today
What is it with Rocketfan comparing role players on another team to Yao?
lol rocketfan comparing Yao to Channing Frye
lol rocketfan comparing Yao to Tyson Chandler
And that's why they are getting viable insurance
Of course you can't stay on topic, I wouldn't expect you to. If you can understand the concept of what I am saying, these franchises have their flaws. Ours is relying on Yao, yours is making moves for washed up players, and the Suns' penny pinching ownership

I'd like to congratulate Michael Jordan on being the first executive in history to avoid saving money in a salary dump. Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca have one year left at a combined $14.1 million, while Eduardo Najera and Matt Carroll are owed a combined $17.1 million over the next three years. Throw in cash (presumably the maximum allowable $3 million) from Dallas, and they managed to break even while giving away their starting center for two guys who will occupy seats 11 and 12 at the end of the bench. Strike up the band.
For those who haven't heard, Charlotte traded Chandler and Ajinca to Dallas on Tuesday for two of the deadest-weight contracts in the league (Najera and Carroll), cash, and the non-guaranteed contract of Erick Dampier. I still have no idea why.
If the Bobcats flip Dampier for something of greater value than Chandler I'll take it all back, but it doesn't appear they're set to do that. Instead they robbed Peter to pay Paul, cutting $8 million off the current year's payroll but taking it on in future years. Among other casualties, this deal basically kills whatever slim hope they had of getting under the cap in 2011.
Coming on the heels of an equally jarring scheme to trade Chandler and Boris Diaw to Toronto for Jose Calderon, it's not quite clear if His Airness and his hand-picked staff have a plan, or if so what that plan might entail. I thought this kind of silliness in Charlotte would stop when Robert Johnson sold the team, but I guess not.
As for Dallas, I thought it was a better deal than they've been given credit for. Look, we all want our team to hit a home run, but sometimes it's just as important to keep hitting singles.
And for once, the Mavericks stopped swinging for the fences and made a sensible deal that greases the skids for further ones down the road. By trading Dampier's non-guaranteed contract, along with Carroll and Najera, to Charlotte for Chandler, the Mavs greatly improved their financial flexibility going forward, and did little harm to their prospects in the short term.
First, however, we have to discuss the alternative: Dallas could have gone for the home run and traded Dampier, along with two first-round picks, to Minnesota for Al Jefferson. This would have been a classic Mavs move, akin to recent trades for Jason Kidd, Caron Butler and Shawn Marion, but the pieces didn't fit. Jefferson and Dirk Nowitzki would have been terrible partners on the defensive end, and offensively Jefferson was never going to get the rock enough in the post with all the scoring-minded players around him.
What Dallas really needs to vault itself to elite status is a first-rate perimeter player; at the moment the Mavs man those positions with several 30-something former stars but no current ones. With none available to be had with the Dampier contract, they did the next best thing.
By adding Chandler, the Mavs retain the rights to a top defensive center. Additionally, he has a $12 million expiring contract, which gives the Mavs maximum flexibility to pursue other trades during the course of the season. No, it isn't quite as alluring as being able to waive Dampier and cleaning the books entirely, but it's a useful asset.
Additionally, two other factors have been underrated. First, dumping Carroll and Najera helps the Mavs' flexibility going forward by subtracting $6.5 million in dead weight from the 2011-12 payroll. If somehow things go off the rails this year, Dallas could very easily get itself well under the cap next summer -- words that have been rarely spoken around Big D in the Mark Cuban era.
Second, the Mavs walk away with a trade exception worth $6.8 million -- enough in itself to land a fairly good player if the right deal comes along.
So it's not the Pau Gasol trade. But it's something. The Mavs have a top-notch defensive frontcourt with Chandler and Haywood, and they've left open a number of options for pursuing roster upgrades during the course of the season.

Nah, I'm fine with this move I guess. I see what they're doing - creating cap space for 2011 and beyond and not getting worse in the meantime, as well as not making a move merely for the sake of making a move.
Al Jefferson would've been nice. I know that there were very valid concerns about him coming back from ACL surgery, having 3/42 left on his deal, his status as a defensive liability, and concerns over his work ethic/maturity after the DUI last year. But I thought he brought a skillset that is sorely missing from this team. I thought from a pure talent perspective, turning Dampier into Jefferson was a huge win. I figured some of his liabilities would be muted going from a #1 option for a franchise to a supporting cast member on a very good team.
If you look at our roster, two glaring weaknesses stand out: not enough low-post scoring, and our wing positions are manned primarily by guys past their prime in their thirties. We need to get younger, better and more athletic at the wing positions, and we need scoring inside. Dampier's contract realistically wasn't going to address both those roster weaknesses, but he could solve one of them. That's why I think Mavs fans are upset about missing out on Jefferson and doing this deal instead - fans in general are drawn to splashy moves involving big names, and they were sold on this contract by the team and its lackeys as a tool for landing a major upgrade in talent. Assuming he's healthy, and that's a big if, Chandler is only a marginal upgrade from Dampier.
The front office never counseled patience, they instead promised this summer the Mavs would make a big splash to finally get Dirk the Robin (or Batman) he needed.
I am sure Dirk is thrilled with their new long-term outlook.
There's always February for a second-half trade I guess. I just think Dirk is not getting younger, so you really need to take advantage of opportunities like that one instead of just keep kicking the ball forward.
I'm not defending the events of the past 24 hours, but from their perspective, they obviously didn't see Jefferson as an over-the-top move. And therefore it wasn't worth doing and screwing with the cap flexibility that the Mavs are going to FINALLY have starting next summer. Cuban is a fan and for many years after buying the team, he ran them like one. Always going for the big names and the splashy, sexy moves. Playing Moneyball has not been his style.
The TE of 6.5 Millions would cover exactly Poseys contract of 6.5 millions this year (and 6.9 the next).
Still living the Paul pipedream
Paul/Okafor for Chandler+Stevenson+Barea+Butler or Terry+Roddy+Jones/Picks
And Posey for the TE
Edit: They not even need Terry or Butler, without them the 125% rule works allready

They are kind of screwing their cap space by offering full MLE to Al imo.
IMO, this is not about next year. With Damp, he had to be waived by a certain date in order for him to be useful. Trading him for expirings bought them some time to wait and see who will shake loose at the deadline.
Well at least you guys got rid of Najera
DPG makes a good point, if they're going for cap flexibility, why offer Harrington the MLE? Why not split the MLE up to give two short term deals?
If they get AH for the full MLE for this year and next, it looks like their cap figure will be $63 million for 2010-11 and $35 million for 2011-12. And that $35 million for 2011-12 could be $24 million if Terry's final year doesn't get guaranteed. I think it could potentially function like Damp's if he doesn't play enough minutes next season.
Terry needs to play less than 1500 minutes and they can buy him out for 5 million next year. Can be easily done with the emerge of Roddy, Harrington as SF option and Butler cutting weight and handling the SG position better.
How do you figure:
Dirk: 20M
AH: 6M
Kidd: 8.5M
Marion: 7.9
Roddy: 1.2
Barea: 2M?
------------------
45.6M
This is not taking into consideration Terry.
Tbh this isn't a TERRIBLE move for Dallas if they didn't resign Haywood or overpay Harrington. Chandler woulda given them a competent center for 1 year so they wouldn't have to commit a ton of long term money to Haywood. Doesn't make much sense tho since their cap situation is ed regardless with Marion, Terry, Dirk and Haywood all on the books.
Or Haywood
Chandler played less than 100 games in the last 2 years, for sure they didnt wanna pull a Houston and rely to 100% on Chandlers health at the center spot.
