Masters of the NFL: For first time, Cowboys enter season as winningest team

12:35 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 20, 2010

BY GERRY FRALEY / The Dallas Morning News
    [email protected]
If having the Super Bowl in their home ballyard this season does not turn up the pressure on the Cowboys, this franchise achievement should.
After 50 years of trying, the Cowboys will enter the season for the first time with the highest all-time winning percentage in pro football history. By winning their final three regular-season games last year, the Cowboys pushed into the playoffs and also boosted their winning percentage to .580 and passed Miami, at .579.
That sets the bar at a high level for the Cowboys. To live up to past standards, all this season's club has to do is stay home for what would be its ninth Super Bowl appearance after finishing the regular season with the league's top record.
It's the story-line for this season.
"I can't think of a greater source of motivation for this year's team than to remind them of the legacy of this franchise," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. "The great players who have come before them and the high standard of performance that our fans are accustomed to, too."
The Cowboys are only the fifth franchise since 1963 to have the distinction of highest winning percentage. The others are Cleveland, which reigned from 1963 through '76, the Los Angeles-Oakland Raiders from 1977-'96, Miami from 1997-98 and 2000-09 and Jacksonville in 1999.
Jacksonville debuted as an expansion team in 1995 and reached the playoffs in each of the next four seasons. The records for Miami and Oakland include their pre-merger seasons in the AFL. The same holds for Cleveland, which dominated the All America Football Conference before joining the NFL in 1950.
"It's particularly meaningful for the organization to have that mark as we enter into a year where we will celebrate 50 seasons of Dallas Cowboys football," Jones said. "It is a reflection of a great commitment and a high level of excellence from a large group of people over the course of five decades. We all know that winning is the name of the game."
When Jones took control of the franchise after Bum Bright's disastrous run, the Cowboys ranked fourth in all-time winning percentage at .607. They rank 10th in the league for winning percentage (.548) during the Jones era, but author Michael MacCambridge credits him and former general manager Tex Schramm for putting the franchise into this lofty position.
"Almost every other team has had extended periods of poor performance – down periods if you will," said MacCambridge, whose America's Game has received glowing reviews for its chronicling of the NFL's rise to prominence. "The Cowboys have never been down for very long.
"You can chalk it up to many things, but you have to start with this: The club has had two primary decision-makers, Tex Schramm and then Jerry Jones, in 50 years."
MacCambridge credited Schramm with developing an influential blueprint of how to run a pro football organization and making shrewd hires such as coach Tom Landry and personnel director Gil Brandt. The Cowboys' three Super Bowl wins under Jones outweigh the three consecutive 5-11 seasons at the start of this century, MacCambridge said.
"Jerry Jones was hammered when the Cowboys went 5-11, but he has to get credit for doing what was necessary to keep the Cowboys among the elite," he said. "It's more than just money. Part of being a successful GM in the 21st century is being able to relate to modern athletes. Jones is superb at that and at framing what it means to be a Cowboy."
To be a Cowboy this season requires two things: have the NFL's best regular-season record and get to the Super Bowl. That's all.

Leave to Dallas to spin it so the Cowboys still look successful. How about their record over the past 10 seasons? 82-78.

Texans WR Tells San Antonio Cowboys Fans: We are Going to Make ‘Em Eat Their Words

Posted by Jesse Rios under Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans

Houston Texans wide receiver Jacoby Jones confidently called out all San Antonio’s Cowboys fans who think their team is the only pro football team in the Lone Star State:
“We are going to make ‘em eat their words.”
The warning came after visits with San Antonio’s 1250 ESPN The Zone and the San Antonio Express-News. Jones said that his mission was to win, and the Texans, too, are “playing for the Lombardi Trophy like everyone else.” Going into his fourth season as a pro, Jones’ maturation seems to be on the right track to make an impact for the Texans in 2010. And for the preseason and regular season games against the Cowboys:
“Both times we play them, it’s going to be a dogfight.”
Jacoby Jones caught six touchdowns last year, showing imporvement in route running and his ability to hold the ball. Andre Johnson and David Anderson’s leadership has really helped Jones mature, enough for him to push eighth-year pro Kevin Walter for the wide receiver job opposite Johnson.

1st season without Owens as a team that was expected by many to miss the playoffs. Then they won the division by playing well down the stretch and won a playoff game in impressive fashion. They already conquered 2 demons to take that next step. I am not going to sit here and call the Cowboys the best team in football but I don't see how they don't get better. They have a very talented team that should be even better this season.

The article states the all time winning percentage at 58%, and the Cowboys are a tad over 51% in the last 10 years you pointed out. Given three of those were 5-11 seasons, the Cowboys have been right on track or way over with the exception of 3 seasons.

Also, with 58% winning being the best in the league, by your definition every team is mediocre or less than mediocre. Doesn't make sense.

I'm going to Training Camp next week at the Alamodome and will be watching the Safeties closely. As a boys fan that is the position I am most worried about. Last year I watched the receivers closely and felt better about the boys after watching Austin Miles and Kevin Olgetree. Hopefully some of these young safeties get the job done because I'm thinking SUPER this year.

What needs to happen is Mike Hamlin breaking out in camp then taking the reins for the regular season. Alan Ball is too small to realistically play the position over 16 games + playoffs (hopefully) and the coaches and players have been raving about Hamlin. The Cowboys started with the worst average starting field position in the NFL last season, and a lot of that is because Ken Hamlin never made any ays on the ball from a position where the defense needs turnovers. If Hamlin can become that guy then Ball slides to his natural position on the team as the 4th corner (and one of the better if not the best 4th corner in the league) and the defense will be more solid.

I got my party pass season tix in the mail today. Now all I gotta do is sell them so I can go down to Houston for the game there in September.

I'm not counting out Akwasi Owusu-Ansah or Pat Watkins when it comes to starting FS either. It's probably the most wide open position going into camp. It's nice that they have a lot of young options though. Hamlin and Ball are the favorites, but there is a lot we don't know about AOA and I have always liked Watkins who has been around for awhile so he knows the defense.

These records are based on teams who have played at least 10 years. Houston has played for 8...if they play on the same level for the next 2 years and don't step it up, they will be on this list as the team with the worst percentage in the league. You asked for the "lol Texans." I was just posting the news...

I hear ya. My concerns with Aki is that he's not only a rookie, but he's a rookie from a small DII school who is coming off a shoulder injury and will be switching positions in the NFL. IMO not realistic for him to be the starting free safety this year on a team with legit preseason SB chances.

I'd love for Watkins to step up into that starting role, but he's just not shown over the last several years that he can consistently make plays at the position. His problem is getting out of position way too often to be the starting safety full time, and I'd be shocked if he somehow steps up that much this year.

That is going to be an interesting position to watch not only in camp but for the first few games of the season to see if someone can lay claim to it similar to what Jenkins dis last year with the 2nd corner slot.

I'm kind of excited about the possibilities with Aki though..wasn't he the DII leader in INTs? We could really use someone who has the eye to pick off a few.
