I agree except for (2) being not likely. 2 years, $5 million/year, team option on 2nd year more like it.
you realize we are over the salary cap, so we could only sign him for 1) vet min, 2)lle, 3) leftover from mle. Right?

    So, 5/per is impossible.

Spurs are already over the cap. And only a team with Shaq's Bird rights can sign him to trade and I don't think he was with Cleveland long enough for them to qualify.

Above all else, the need isn't there. McDyess fits perfectly the elder statesman bigman off the bench for 15 minutes a night role. The Splitter acquisition completes the Spurs' bigman rotation, and will keep McDyess' minutes down during the regular season, which is a benefit for his health and also the team as he typically doesn't turn it on until later in the season.

Anyways, back to Shaq. Yes, if the Spurs were in need of another big and Shaq was willing to accept the remainder of the MLE or the LLE, then it would be worth seriously considering. Otherwise, at this point there's no reason. The Spurs have a complete frontcourt rotation.

These days, the acquisition of Shaq is the surrender flag to other teams. You have to be really desperate for attention to pick up Shaq. He's not going to get you to the promised land, he's not going to add athleticism to your team. He's not going to bring cohesion into the locker room. All he's going to do is occupy paint and doink FTs at inopportune times in the game.

Might as well try to David to come back.

If it doesn't make you a contender or contribute to a genuine rebuild, it's a bad move.

Shaq is looking for a two year farewell tour, and has said as much. Since that would overlap Tim's final years, I'll pass. Even though he probably would cringe at the attention, Tim deserves it 100X more than a broken down, vagabond Shaq would.

if hes coming off the bench then he wouldnt be defending alot of pick and rolls, i think if we got him we can get our best pick and roll defender and shaq out there to slam bodies on the ground, we need some muscle to keep up with the massives in this league
Yeah, you're right. The only people who know how to run a pick and roll in the NBA are starting.

Seriously, WTF kind of stupid logic is that?

Shaq isn't a cancer...he's a very good locker room guy, respected and appreciated by his teammates. He also brings a very specific skill-set (low-post O&D) and is effective when motivated.

Having said that, the Spurs really don't need his specific skill-set. They've already got an extremely effective low-post presence in Duncan.

With Gasol and Bynum in L.a., you need size and muscle. Shaq wouldn't be replacing Duncan, he'd be teaming up with Duncan. Bonner and Dice don't give you much on the defensive end, and blair is gritty, but undersized and not yet a defensive presence. Splitter wasn't a great defender in Euroball, I doubt he'll be a major factor defensively here, but who knows. Bottom line, I would take Shaq at the LLE but I wouldn't pay him his asking price of 8 million.

I don't understand why people think that Shaq is any kind of defensive answer.

    AT ALL.

The only benefit he gives defensively is that his is big and takes up space. Any big who can move AT ALL will torch him. Any big who has any mid-range game AT ALL with torch him. Any big that makes him move his feet AT ALL to defend with get him into foul trouble and torch him.

If all that was needed to beat the lakers was getting a big, fat, tall stiff, every team would have the answer. That is not it. You need a big who is athletic too.

EASILY IMAGINED DEFENSIVE NIGHTMARE WITH SHAQ: LA has two mobile bigs; just take turns with whomever SHAQ DEFENDS doing the pick n roll with kobe. Instant dunk at the basket OR wide open jumper for kobe.

    thanks, but next.

i disagree, if you think about an injury to lets say mcdyess then you have timmy tiago starting and blair bonner playing the rest of the game thats a of alot of time for bonner to be playing in the playoffs dont you think?

that example was a realistic one most likely one of these injuries will occur an even more realistic one is timmy or bonner getting injured, if timmy gets hurt were putting alot of minutes and faith in splitter/old dice/no show bonner thats alot of pressure for tiago in his first year!! if bonner gets hurt thats way to many minutes for tim and dice.

lets say they still limit dice and tim and play the outta splitter/blair but you know pop wont do that, and all that would be backed up with a defensive truck waiting to play and can still produce a double double from time to time w/limited minutes how in the is anyone going to say they would rather get some scrub other than shaq.

believe me pop will do it if shaq takes what we have, i dont know about you guys but last i checked shaq had star power/and DEFENSE on the court, he also will produce way more than that intimidated nerd bonner spurs fans if you really want to see the spurs get a ring this year were going to have to crawl our way to the top this year and shaq can help us on the court/refs and all everyone likes a good story esp stern

Shaq's individual defense was actually pretty good this season..opponents shot around 39% against him in individual situations..he's obviously a massive liability in pick and roll situations, but he's competent everywhere else defensively..

Duncan and Shaq would never be able to play together, except against LA, so I agree that that would be the reason the Spurs could consider him..they probably won't, because he would be like the 6th big man, which would probably turn him off, and he's a bad fit overall, but he would be a good option against the Gasol/Bynum frontcourt IMO..if anybody saw them play this year, it was pretty clear that both Bynum and Gasol are intimidated by Shaq, especially Gasol..

A source confirmed to Povtak on Wednesday that, while the Spurs have great respect for Shaq, he would disrupt their chemistry.

as much as i dislike shaq, i wouldn't be surprised if the spurs sign him up.

the spurs championship hopes are closing real fast, and if desperate measures are needed then the f.o. should pull the trigger.
