Hmmm. Good post. I think it should be OK for someone who is bald to wear a headband.
We all know the spurs are known for being classy on and off the court. But where do you think the no headbands and no extra stuff tradition originated? It also could just be tradition but I know the only one this past season to wear anything was McDyess and his Elbow pad. (which is okay in my eyes)
I think during practice, players get to wear it but if a ball hits them in the head or if they make a dumb play pop tells them to take it off!
Previous players who rocked a spurs headband:
Drew Gooden
Devin Brown
Steven Jackson
Mario Elie (a few games i think)
(all of which are not with us today lol)
can you add any others? and would you like to see more players rocking extra NBA accessories.?

There's a no headbands rule?
Why would a bald dude need a headband more than a dude with hair?
I don't think it's written down anywhere, but I remember reading something about Pop making fun of guys who wear them until they stop out of humiliation.
It seems like someone with hair would have a natural soaker upper (for lack of a better word). I think a hairline would help block the flow of sweat to the eyes. But for someone with no hair, there would be an unimpeded river of sweat. I'm not for sure about this but only guessing.
Why would you think there was even a rule banning this?
You named 4 players who wore headbands
ohmwrecker: thats crazy you read an article I always wondered how pop handled it!
I noticed players who try it for a while then just stop doing it. But in the league the respected best defensive studs don't rock it(Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Chauncey BIllups). So thats good company for me.
I changed the word to "tradition" for all you word smiths.
The only coach I can remember having a headband rule is Scott Skiles and I remember him and Big Ben having it out over it
I have a full head of hair and when I play ball, I sweat like a mother er and it seems to generate from my hairline. I refuse to wear a headband though.
Most of the guys in the league who wear headbands are kind of dumbasses.
Hmmm. Interesting. But do you think it would be more if you were bald?
What kind of haircut do you have? Maybe an afro is more absorbant.
Rule and tradition are 2 very different things.
I do agree that pop frowns on it, but hes not about making a mountain over a mole hill
I dont think any player in the league actually wears a headband for its actual purpose. Its all about idividuality which some coaches of a TEAM sport frown on
That's an overstatment I think. Of all the players in the league with headbands, I bet at least some of them wear them to help with sweat control.
It's thick and curly . . . and the top of my head is always fairly dry even if I sweat a lot.
This is fascinating, isn't it?
I mean i'd rock all the nba accessories cause it would take away from my game and give me an image but dudes who can flat out ball just don't need it.
Well it certainly is something to think about. But I'm not sure if I can revise my theory just because of your experience. Maybe you just don't notice that the sweat comes out equally from all over and it just appears to come from your hairline due to gravity.
ohmwrecker, I think the only logical step to solve this experiment is to shave yo head
I see what you're saying . . I have a friend who is bald and he gets those little sweat beads on top of his head. Maybe it has something to do with individual sweat viscosity and how fast the sweat travels down your head.
lol sweat viscosity
Taking that farther, I wonder if one's diet before a game has any noticible effect on the sweat viscosity. Maybe instead of wearing headbands, controlling sweat might be a simple as making different food choices.
