If the Sox were to finish above Texas, wouldnt the Rays still get New York in the first round because they are the Wild Card? Or is it based on record?

You can't play within your division in the division series. It's likely the wild card winner is gonna come from the East. The team with the best record would play the wild card winner only if it was a team from another division. Otherwise, they play the division winner with the worse record between the other two. So it would be Yanks vs White Sox and Rangers vs Rays.

Sweep this series and take a damn nice 11.5 game lead in division. Would be almost insurmountable barring an epic collapse.
