Toshiba's make excellent laptops. I can certainly vouch for Asus quality (so much so that their prices are climbing rapidly). I own my 2nd Acer now but the first died on me and I thought I was going to stay away from them. Well, it was too good a deal to pass up, IMO, and almost everyone has good things so say about Acer so I gave them another shot. A few months in all is fine.

btw my boss at the screen printing place just got a nice little toshiba laptop, granted the screen is a bit smaller than my liking, for $300 at best buy. works great.
my friend has an older acer 17" which is real nice.
and i know CryBaby won't like this suggestion, unless games are what you're really after, but i'd buy a mac laptop over anything else. if my price range is what yours is i'd go with that toshiba or something similar in price and put ubuntu on it unless once again playing games is the deal breaker.

To be honest, it's much less of a big deal today than it was in the past. I mean, even if an AMD quad-core isn't as fast as an i7, most processors are completely overkill for anything you're going to do on a computer anyway, and the gaming differences in processors aren't that great. AMD still holds a pretty sizable price advantage over Intel, so there's still a case to be made that you can buy an AMD chip and save money, although Intel is a faster processor.
Looking back now, it's really strange. Every 18 months or so, the advantage seemed to tip toward whoever was behind in overall speed. Intel was on top until the K6 came out, then they came back with the Pentium IIIs, the P4s were garbage so AMD dominated again, and they held a big advantage with the Athlon 64x2, but now it's swung once again. And every time I go to buy a computer, Intel is in the lead, so all of my processors have been Intel. Videocards are a different story... but I've had good luck with both ATI and Nvidia to this point.

I need help also. I travel every weekend and was looking for something with a long lasting battery life and then I stumbled upon this baby: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+...&skuId=9703393

The OP said he wants to game, and your recommendations are a $300 laptop or a Mac? It's almost like you read what the OP put, then decided to tell him to get the exact opposite of what he's looking for.
To review, my recommendations are:
In his price range, and considerate of his desires for what he wants to do with the laptop.
Your recommendations are completely out of his price range and insufficient for his needs.

What do you want to do with the laptop? You said you travel every day... 17" is a huge laptop, and it might not be as convenient.
What size would you like, are you going to game?
Yeah, I tried to fix it but it won't work.
And I mostly use it to watch movies on the road and the internet. I don't game at all and I think it is actually a 16".
