Regular season
Roy
Johnson
Manu
Playoffs
Roy
Manu
Johnson
Roy
Distant second is Johnson
Third by a hair is Ginobili.
This is easy. Fully healthy? Manu, Roy, JJ. Manu has been a thorn in the Lakers side for years. Roy is a close second when healthy. JJ is not in the conversation and that mega KT he got from ATL is a cruel joke.
Close to calling it between Johnson and Ginobili. Roy is better than both by a large margin. I love JJ, but he's a one-on-one player. I like Ginobili, but he's too inconsistent to be an elite guard. That's all that stands in his way. He's not consistently a cut-above. Roy is, if he's healthy.
Manu is last if we're talking about an entire season..if we're talking about potential peak performance, he might be #1..I would take Manu of the 2nd half of last season over both guys..at this point in his career, I doubt he would be able to handle the load of the other guys for an entire season..
I would go..
Roy
Johnson
Manu
If I was in a playoff series or a critical game and needed a win, I'd go:
Manu
Roy
Johnson
In his prime, Manu stomps over the other two. Right, I'd say it's Roy, Manu, then JJ
Assume the playoffs are starting and you're picking from the pool. All 3 are healthy and in top shape.
Roy
Ginobili
Johnson
You said fully healthy but I assume you also meant about their abilities right now so I would go:
Roy
Manu
JJ
If it was their very best I would choose Manu over Roy over JJ.
Ginobili NBA career stat-wise will always pale in comparison with other shooting guards, most of them volume shooters who were for the most part of their careers the first option on their respective teams. Add that to the fact that he only entered the NBA at age 25, was used to a different style of play, shorter and fewer games over the course of a season, plus his national teams duties and you have a full case why he´s rated so low for an entire NBA season.
But well, in the end play-offs are what matters the most and that's when you have to be at the top of your game and no way I would take any of these guys over Ginobili.
And Roy is? Dude has spent half of his career injured.
Based on that, Ginobili hands down. Despite his age and injury history, his peak is still higher than Roy's and Johnson's. When he's right, Ginobili can look as good as any player in the game for stretches. Even two years ago, during his (to this point) career year, I don't ever remember thinking Roy was even top five for a stretch, let alone as good as any player. Johnson is not really in the discussion no matter how you want to break it down. The only thing he has on Roy and Ginobili is durability.
Shooting guard has the most clearly defined top five out of any of the positions though. You can debate the order of the top two and three-five, but the five players are cut and dried.
This is actually a good point. I think Roy is seen by many as this elite guard trailing only to Kobe Bryant and D Wade and with all the future ahead of him but that's not exactly true.
He´s been in the league for 4 year but since he played 4 year in college he's already 26, it's not like we're talking about Kevin Durant.
I mean if we compare his career, even stat-wise, with guys like Vince Carter or T Mac when they were the same age it's not even close and look what happened to them when injuries happen and their athletic abilities started to drop.
He's still young and has the best years ahead of him but he better not wait until he hits 30 to start showing it.
With all 3 healthy and in top shape, Brandon Roy comes first for me. Next would be Manu Ginobili, then that loser Joe Johnson.
Also, the consistency argument is unfair. It's a lot easier to be "consistent" and put good stats game after game when you're the number one option and know that no matter how you're playing you'll still get your 20 shots and 35/40 minutes.
Regular Season:
Roy
Ginobli
Johnson
Playoff:
Roy
Ginobli
Johnson
What do you guys base on to say that Roy > player "X" in the playoffs? He played only two playoffs series (one and a half really) and lost both.
