This is gonna be one huge religious argument/debate.
Fact remains clear though, why would whoever wrote Exodus (can't come to mind in the moment) write to mislead or...wait... I think I've lost myself.

The concept of the "Loving Father" I believe is a Christian ideal.
The Old Testament are all chocked full of Jewish ideals.
The Bible is a great book.
A book.
Paper and words written by human beings.
Human beings have feelings,opinions,agendas,beliefs,prejudices,etc
To say that the bible is NOT a great book with some great material would be foolish.
To say that the bible is more than a book or to say that the bible is the actual word of god,etc
Is to begin to lose touch with reality and to keep getting farther from reality when you begin to add illusions and false beliefs on top of each other....
To begin to say that those who don't believe everything that you pile on top of each other and to say that those who don't swallow all these fallacies will actually be punished or burn in a place called ,etc
is to begin to enter the realm of the insane
take it for what it is worth---none of what I have said is untrue
but still...some will argue and try to sway you towards their insanity
we live in an insane asylum
Oh and there are plenty of instances when God is the Merciful Father in the Old Testament. He would just have wrath issues when His people simply ignored him completely.

if god is merciful, then why didnt he teleport the jews out of egypt?
Perhaps but then how to explain God's forgiveness and sparing his wrath if he finds only a small handful of good people? Like when Abraham went asking God if he would spare I forget the town if he just found 50,40,30, et al there that were good.
Just that God was still trying to figure out this God thing...So the 'god' of the Old Testament was inconsistent. Does not sound like a perfect God to me. More proof that the supposed God of the Old Testament was Lucifer in many cases.

Well, nobody is arguing over the existence of love. And altruism has been proven to exist, so that's close enough.

That is a false comparison. You can explain emotions through associations made and stored in the hippocampus. Love, specifically being modulated by serotonin.
But on a more biblical level, I prefer that idea that lucifer described in the OT is actually the "good" deity. He simply wanted to do better than yahwe, and for that he was punished eternally by a spiteful, jealous child. He was interested in knowledge instead of unquestioned devotion.
