Should the Denver Nuggets elect to trade Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks are believed to be the All-Star forward's first choice for a new home. But they are not his only option.

Multiple league sources familiar with his situation told SI.com that Anthony would also be open to signing a long-term deal with Houston or New Jersey should either of those teams offer the Nuggets an acceptable trade package.
Getting Anthony, 26, to agree to an extension is the key to any deal as he can become a free agent after the 2010-11 season. Denver has offered Anthony a three-year, $65 million extension, but he has balked at signing it and is reportedly looking for a way out. Because acquiring Anthony would require a substantial offer, it is highly unlikely any team would risk making a trade without having Anthony agree to a simultaneous extension.

While resolving Anthony's situation is a priority in Denver, there is no urgency to make a deal quickly. The Denver Post reported in June that the Nuggets were prepared to trade Anthony rather than watch him opt out of his contract next summer. However, the Nuggets are without a general manager after they let go of top basketball executives Mark Warkentien and Rex Chapman.

Former Suns executive David Griffin is believed to be the top candidate to run the basketball operations, but a league source said the Nuggets were still interviewing candidates.

The Rockets already have Chris Bosh and Yao Ming. That would be a godly big three.

The Nuggets would be stupid to accept just Gallinari, Curry and a '14 1st. They've got to at least get Chandler thrown in and dump Balkman's salary in the process.

Even then, I'm not crazy about that trade. We're talking about a top eight player entering his prime here. They've got to get back at least one blue chip prospect and despite the big stink about Gallinari, I think he falls just short of qualifying as a blue chip prospect.

The Rockets are better positioned to make a trade for Anthony than the Knicks. If he ends up on the Rockets, they could conceivably vault into legit contender status.

They've been hoarding assets waiting for a star of this magnitude to come onto the market. I've got to believe they'll pull out all the stops to acquire him. They could offer Battier and Jeffries expiring contracts, plus some combination of Patterson, Budinger, Hill, myriad future 1sts, the rights to Lull, etc. Or, if they're determined to keep Battier out of the package, they could offer Martin, which would give the Nuggets a go to scorer in return, though they'd obviously need an SF more than an SG. However, that would free them up to move Smith for a competent SF.

The Nets, I'm not sure there's a deal that makes sense. The Nuggets have no need for Harris, Outlaw is about to begin an expensive deal. In other packages, they could get similar and in some cases better SF's, who are making significantly less. Short of offering Favors in addition to Murphy's expiring contract, the best they could probably do is Murphy, Williams and a future 1st.

please god no, I hope the Nets don't do something stupid and try to trade for Melo, that would suck, Melo along with all his other buddies Paul, Lebron, Wade, and Bosh are ruining the name this summer, I don't want any of them. We should all just save ourselves and watch FOOTBALL

I agree about this, although I think the Nets have more to offer then the Knicks do

They do, if they offer Favors. The Knicks are limited draft pick wise and don't have a prospect the caliber of Favors. But I'm skeptical the Nets would offer Favors.

It would depend on how quickly and how good the Nets became with Anthony, which is somewhat difficult to predict. Because of that, I can't judge the quality of the picks, so I couldn't say definitively if Murphy, Williams and two future 1sts is better than Gallinari, Curry, Chandler, a future 1st and taking Balkman's salary off the Nuggets hands. Of course, the former I made up and the latter I'm basing off a rumor and adding parts to, but I think those are realistic offers.

In a perfect world it would be Lee or Lowry and the six million trade exception and maybe use a future Knicks pick.

The only realistic trade proposal that Denver would even consider would be....

    Denver Receives:

    Shane Battier
    Kevin Martin
    Jordan Hill
    Jermaine Taylor
    NY Picks

    Houston Receives:

    Carmelo Anthony
    Aaron Afflalo

Denver gets a top 5 SG in Martin, defensive specialist, veteran, and expiring contract in Battier, nice young pieces for the future in Hill and Taylor, and very lucrative draft picks for the future. Benefits both teams.

as a hornets fan wouldn't you want scola and brooks for free if you knew chris paul was gonna leave after this season?

No. Actually, I would be more surprised that Chris Paul was able to leave with one year still left on his contract.

No chance Martin is better than Wade, Bryant, Ginobili, Roy or Johnson.

That's a realistic trade though. We know how much the Rockets value Battier, but I can't imagine he'd be a deal breaker, particularly with them getting back Affflalo, who can play the same role. Also, it allows them to hold onto Patterson and Budinger, the two young, inexpensive assets they'd most likely most want to keep. This could vault them into le contention.

For the Nuggets, Hill is a decent young asset and he'd add front court depth to the Nuggets, who could use that. Martin takes Anthony's role and Battier takes Afflalo's. Taylor could become an inexpensive backup for Martin, which would allow them to rid themselves of the erratic Smith. This could keep them in contention for a lower playoff spot and make them a decent team going forward.

Seem like a match all the way around. So much so that I'd be surprised if the Rockets don't get this done.

Yeah, they might have to give up Martin to get this deal done. I'd do it. That does seem like a realistic trade.
