The 1956 act is a different story, but Johnson's switch to supporting any civil rights bill was a pretty momentous occasion as it ended the solid south opposition to such legislation. However watered down it was from what was originally proposed, the 1957 Act was the first civil rights bill to pass in like 80 years largely due to the efforts of LBJ.
