Uninsured Slow To Sign Up For Coverage

HACKENSACK, N.J. - Just two people in New Jersey will begin receiving coverage Monday under new plans created by federal health care reforms.

NJ Protect plans are available to those who have been without insurance for at least six months and submit evidence of pre-existing health conditions.

The state will receive $141 million in federal subsidies to cover claims that exceed the premiums paid by the beneficiaries.

Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey spokesman Tom Vincz expects more people will enroll in the coming weeks.

Vincz says more than 600 applications were downloaded and 268 information kits were sent out following the program's announcement on Aug. 1.

Two policies are available, with premiums ranging from $212 to $768 monthly, depending on age.

I'll be honest, I don't know the specifics of the coverage, but I am just wondering if it is comprehensive, or defined benefit. If the former this is a pretty good deal, if the latter, it is slightly expensive.

I keep hearing employer-provided insurance cost for a family of 4 is about $13K/year, with about 25% paid for by the employee after tax. This is subsidized by making the play a tax-deductible business expense.

That 25%, co-pays, and deductibles are all set to rise.

We'd "fix" US health care gouging real damn fast if families had to pay $14K/year out of their own pockets and after-tax. The public option would roll out immediately.

    You didn't answer the question.

Is it your prediction that only two people will sign up for these programs every three weeks from now on?

    Yes or no.

If they only sign up two people every three weeks, it is a mathematical certainty.

So you are too much of a pussy to actually predict that will happen.

    That is a certainty.

Wait..wasn't that what the 25,000 turned out for last week? That huge crown that the police had to hold back?...Oh yeah. That was for free rent. This is insurance they actually have to pay for. Like...with real money. Right.

I'm in New Jersey and had no idea about the program...

Truth be told, Ins Co around here use every trick in the book to deny coverage. But mostly because the state mandates all sorts of dubious coverage, like infertility and what not.

It depends on income but most of the people they interviewed on the news thought it was free.
