Coming this fall, Microsoft will release a new, re-designed Xbox 360 wireless controller that features a transforming d-pad and different colored buttons.

Acknowledging the trouble many players have had with the current d-pad, Microsoft's engineers have upgraded the controller's d-pad to go "from a plus to a disc with the twist of the wrist," according to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live.

The new d-pad provides "ultimate accuracy and control for both directional as well as sweeping movements."


The new, matte silver controller also features concave analog sticks and gray A,B,X,Y buttons for "added style." The controller will only be available with the Play & Charge Kit on November 9 in the United States for $64.99, with a European release planned for next year.

In a follow up e-mail, Hryb told IGN there are "no plans at this time" to release the controller separately and that the new colored buttons will not be the color design moving forward. They are only for this controller.

On most retail games yes but on the arcade where old school 2d fighters keep getting remade into HD no. I bought most my 2d remakes on the ps3 store because I hate the xbox Dpad and it don't feel right playing with the analog stick.

Agreed. Its why I couldnt get into SF4, Hadouken's never felt right on a joystick.

But really, more importantly, everyone was just plain old fashion better than me by orders of magnitude. SF4's normal difficulty kicked my ass.

I will honestly never play Street Fighter again because of that.

Not too many fans of this controller.. but my favorite has to be the big ass original Xbox controller and the Dreamcast controller.

Least favorite has to go to PSone, 2, and 3 controllers.. they just don't fit right.

glad they could find the time to fix up the dpad issue 4 years later by implementing proper 30 year old directional control.

will help out immensely with the xbla games / remakes.

I've not been into fighting games since I was 11, but I never really had an issue with the 360 dpad. As far as this new controller goes, I feel it's an ass ugly waste of money. If I was into fighting games enough that I wanted a different option from the s controller, I'd just buy a fightstick:

I realize this solely based on what I'm accustomed to, but I just can't understand how anyone could like the 360 controller better than the PS3 controller. Every time I play a friend's 360 it takes me several minutes to readjust to those wonky damn analog sticks.

Playstation controllers are maybe the worst of all the modern consoles, imo.

i struggle to play a game with that friggin joystick and the placement of the second joystick is ridiculous. I don't understand why they have only ever made minor changes.
