So far ok, we scored almost everything from the paint. Splitter is careful to not get in foul trouble. I expect much more aggressive defense from Brazil in second half.

Thank God! Well done, Slovenija! I'm proud of them.

Dude-that scoreboard was so behind and the score had gotten close enough to make me really anxious for results. I am glad the end was in our favor!

Slovenia survives Brazil's rally, pulls off upset win

    Posted Sep 1 2010 6:03PM

ISTANBUL (AP) -- Jaka Lakovic scored 20 points, hitting consecutive 3-pointers to halt a furious Brazil comeback, and Slovenia blew nearly all of a 17-point lead before holding on for an 80-77 victory Wednesday.

Slovenia (3-1) took sole possession of second place in Group B, while Brazil (2-2) came up just short again after losing by two to the United States on Monday.

Brazil forward Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers played for the first time after missing the first three games of the world championship while recovering from a sprained ankle. He had four points and four rebounds in 23 minutes.

Primoz Brezec hit his first seven shots and scored 16 points to help the Slovenians take a 14-point halftime lead. A 3-pointer to open the second half made it a 17-point game, but Brazil began chipping away and pulled within 70-68 on Tiago Splitter's basket with 4:25 remaining.

Lakovic hit a 3 with 3:32 remaining, then nailed another about a minute later to make it 76-68. Brazil got back within five in the final minute, but Bostjan Nachbar hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 21 seconds to play to help the Slovenians pull it out.

Nachbar finished with 15 points and Goran Dragic of the Phoenix Suns had 10 for Slovenia, which shot 57 percent from the field.

Marcelo Machado scored 20 points and Splitter added 19 for Brazil. Leandro Barbosa shot just 6 of 18 and had 12.

    LAKOVIC LEADS SLOVENIA HOME

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Slovenia captain Jaka Lakovic came to the rescue and fired his side to a vital Group B win over Brazil at the Abdi Ipekci on Wednesday night.

With Brazil having shaved a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to 70-68 Lakovic, who visited with FIBATV.Com after the win, buried back-to-back three-pointers that helped the Slovenians keep their noses in front and record an 80-77 triumph.

Slovenia seemed to have taken command with a 14-0 run in the second quarter that put them on top, 34-18.

The Brazilians, who nearly upset the United States on Monday, refused to go quietly.

They mounted the comeback with starters Marcelo Huertas and Alex Garcia on the bench.

Instead it was super sub Marcelo Machado, along with Nezinho, who gave excellent defense at the top of a two-three zone that helped force turnovers and allowed the Brazilians to get fastbreak points and back into the game.

Slovenia’s lead was 70-53 with 9:25 to go in the contest when they lost their way.

Two straight three-pointers by Marcelo Machado and then a Leandro Barbosa fastbreak layup after a Machado steal cut the deficit to 70-61.

Machado then came up with a steal and raced down the floor for another lay-up before burying a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 70-66.

His three-ball gave Machado 14 points.

Tiago Splitter (19 points) added a basket down low with 4:20 remaining to cap the 15-0 Brazil run.

The big center who was the Spanish ACB's best player in 2009-10 then had a chance to level the game the next time down the floor but missed and Lakovic shortly after knocked down the first of his two three-pointers for a 73-68 advantage.

Lakovic then nailed his second three-ball with 2:32 remaining for a 76-68 lead.

Brazil still weren't done and kept the pressure on but Lakovic again beat them.

Clinging to a 76-71 lead in the final minute, Lakovic dribbled into the lane and as the Brazilians converged, he passed to Bostjan Nachbar in the right corner and the veteran made his second three-pointer of the night to ice the victory.

Lakovic finished with 20 points, including six shots from long range, while Primoz Brezec 16 and Nachbar had 15.

Machado ended up with a team-high 20 points for Brazil.

Brazil got a lift from Anderson Varejao, who missed the opening three games with an ankle problem but played 23 minutes and had four points and four rebounds while contributing tough defense in his team’s comeback.

You can see the complete game highlights and an interview with Mantas Kalnietis on FIBATV.Com.

Slovenia’s Jaka Lakovic: “We lost our concentration in the fourth quarter and Brazil came back but fortunately it did not cost us victory.

Brazil’s Anderson Varejao: “We came back from a 17-point deficit but were unable to get the win. Tomorrow is another day and we have to forget about this defeat. It’s just like it is in the NBA. It’s great to be back playing again for the first time in the tournament.

SLO - All business for father and son
    02/09/2010

Slovenia vs Croatia . Day 3 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. 28 August 2010. Preliminary round

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - There are the Lorbek brothers, the Dragic brothers and the Udrih brothers.

Over the years, it hasn’t been uncommon to see brothers wearing the Slovenia shirt in the same team.

There are no brother combinations in this year's squad at the FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, but there is a father-son combo.

When Jure Zdovc stepped down as coach before the end of last year, Slovenia turned to veteran coach Memi Becirovic.

He is the father of long-time Slovenia international guard Sani Becirovic.

Sani, 29, had to take a break from national team duty last year to rest a long-standing knee injury but he's back and now hearing orders from his dad.

"It was uncomfortable at the beginning," he said.

"For a few days, I was nervous and I wasn't playing well.

"But once the other players saw us as just a coach and a player, everything was fine and it was no longer strange.

"I am just treated as the other players.

"I have played under him before and we know how to separate the personal from the professional."

The coach says it's all strictly professional in the team.

"During the practice, during the games, I see him as a player - not as a son," he said.

"If I need him, I call him into the game.

"Or if he plays bad and I take him out, there is no emotion.

    "We are both professional."

While Sani has hit the heights as a player, including being drafted by the Denver Nuggets several years ago, Memi was different.

He did play the same positions, but never in the big time.

"I play one-two (guard/point guard) positions," he said.

"I was not such a top level player.

"At 21 years of age, I had an injury in my hip and I quit my playing career and started with my coaching career."

What may come as a surprise is that this summer marks the first time that Memi has coached his son at such a high level.

"For the last 12 years - I hadn't coached him," Memi said.

    "I was just his father.

"Now we have the situation where we are together in the national team.

"For 12 years we didn't work together in a club or a national team so now it's a very interesting moment for both of us."

While Sani is happy to play for his father, the most important thing for him is that he is wearing a Slovenia shirt.

There is nothing quite like running onto the floor to represent your country, especially when you are one of the best-supported national teams in the world.

"It's great to be back," he said.

    "We have a strong team.

"The players did such a great job last year at the EuroBasket.

"I was so proud of them.

"I wasn't able to play because I had to rest my knees but those that made it, took this national team to a new level by finishing fourth."

Both have helped Slovenia advance to the Eight-Finals at the FIBA World Championship as the second-place team in Group B.

    SLO/IRI – Slovenia coast against never-say-die Iran
    02/09/2010

Slovenia vs Iran Day 6 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. 28 August 2010. Preliminary round

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Slovenia signed off in Group B at the FIBA World Championship with a 65-60 victory over Iran.

Iran, who won a lot of plaudits for their hardworking performance in a defeat to the United States on Wednesday, hit back from an early 19-6 deficit to knot the contest with Slovenia at 23-23 with 3:49 to go in the second quarter before going to half-time trailing only by five.

The first five minutes of the third quarter proved to be their undoing as Slovenia went on a 15-5 run to lead 43-28.

Slovenia coach Memi Becirovic, with an eye on the Eight-Finals, decided to use his reserves liberally and Iran took advantage.

Trailing 52-34 at the end of the third quarter, Iran outscored Slovenia 10-5 over the first five minutes of the final frame and continued to get closer.

They ended up losing by just five when Javad Davari hit a long three-pointer right before the buzzer.

Goran Dragic led Slovenia with 18 points and Miha Zupan contributed 15 while Hamed Ehadadi scored 15 and Arsalan Kazemi 13 for Iran.

You can see a the complete highlights of the game as well as an interview with Iran coach Veselin Matic at FIBTV.Com.

    Quotes:

Slovenia captain Jaka Lakovic: “It was a very difficult game to play because we were under no pressure to win. We wanted to rotate the players, spread the minutes. I think we controlled the game, more or less. Now we’re going to face Australia. They are a very physical team and they have great players. It’s going to be a very difficult test for us in the Eight-Finals.”

Iran coach Veselin Matic: “We played the game to show we can play, to stay in the game. We knew they played a hard game yesterday and that was our chance. They started shooting the ball better in the second half. We have learned a lot from this World Championship. The Iran players have shown they are fighters. I’m really proud of my players.”
