Canada and Russia alone should be enough to top volleyball when it comes to number of players.![]()
If popular means money invested and TV coverage, then hockey is way above volleyball indeed. But it lacks african, asian and south american teams (and this is at least one olympic team sport where spain is not good at all).
On a more BB/Spurs related side, I'm happy TP did not participate but I want Les Bleus to be at full force next two years cause it's a golden opportunity to mix the generations and finaly win something. They have the players to do it.
People not living in France don't realize how marginal basketball is in this country. One can think with Parker and all the french players in NBA, basketball is a very popular sport but it isn't. FNT has some good players but when they are out, it's logical that they suck because France hasn't a great basketball tradition.
Just to give you an idea on how small basketball is in France, some TV rights per year:
French BB league: 4 M€
Euroleague: 0.8 M€
NBA: 1.5 M€
French soccer league: 668 M€
The Rugby World Cup is the third most popular sporting event in the World behind the FIFA WC and the Olympics.
Yeah Rugby is pretty popular, and also global. Not only played in Europe, but powerhouse teams exist in the southern hemisphere as well with New Zeeland, Australia, South Africa, and recently Argentina.
Right now he isn't a big star in the spanish league.
