Fifa world player of the year (when there's a WC):

    1994: 1st Romario, 2nd Stoichkov
    1998: 1st Zidane, 2nd Ronaldo
    2002: 1st Ronaldo, 2nd Kahn
    2006: 1st Cannavaro, 2nd Zidane

Messi won't have it. All the winners went to the finals.

It's beetween Forlan (who was the FIFA WC best player), Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta

    Interesting breakdown, thanks.

Xavi and Iniesta are fantastic players, but it should be between Forlan and Sjneider

But in none of those years, there was an individual player with so much consensus as the best player in the world like Messi right now, Messi didn't won CL or the WC but he still had a of a year (IMO, his best individual year yet) he was the Golden boot of all of Europe and carried Barcelona for long stretches of the season without Xavi and/or Iniesta. I still think Messi wins it but by a much smaller margin than last year.

IMO the top three will be:

    1- Messi
    2- Forlan
    3- Sneijder

lol what? Read what you say. Messi has won multiple championships with Barca, and in complete dominating fashion last season, so the no rings lebron comparison is off.

And just because he doesn't have a great game in EVERY big game does not warrant saying he chokes in major games.

December 2009 - scored winning goal in the final of the club world cup vs Estudiantes
Last spring - scored 2 goals vs Stuttgart to secure Barca to quarterfinals of Champs League
Last spring - in the next champs league game vs. Arsenal, scored 4 goals
Last spring - goal vs. Real Madrid, Barca wins el clasico 2-0
Scored load of goals this past year in back to back games, etc etc etc

And this is just the past few months. So sure, he didn't score in the world cup, but saying he chokes in big games is just bull , because it's simply not true.

Don't mind that Italian dude, he's an obvious troll. BTW Messi has 7 goals in 5 finals played with Barcelona, strange kind of choker he is.

And exactly as I've told you...just because he doesn't perform like a freak in every single big game, does not mean he chokes in big games. I gave you relevant examples of some games within the past months only.

Does Kobe Bryant have a great night every single NBA playoff game? How about Tim Duncan?

lol, I never said that Messi gets a hat-trick every single big game of his life, because that would be ridiculous.

I wouldn't argue if Xavi won it over Messi or vice versa, they both have very strong arguments to why they should win but my gut feeling is the voters will give sneijder a ton of votes because of the wc and the champions league.

Personally, I probably would vote for Xavi, then Forlan, then Sneijder.

For me Xavi is the one who deserves it. He won the WC with his countrym being one the best players of the WC and he won everything with Barcelona.

I'm a big Xavi fan (IMO he's the best playmaker and second best overall behind Messi), but he didn't have a WC at the level he's used to play, from the Spanish team alone Villa, Iniesta and even Busquets had a better WC than him.
