Can't say I've ever seen this before. Neither really has a chance at hitting the U.S. but Bermuda might not be so lucky. It's sitting right in Igor's crosshairs...which is the bigger and stronger of the two.

Igor's getting battered by dry air and a 30 knot shear. His eyewall is looking incredibly ragged. In fact, Julia looks more impressive of the two now.

Yesterday though, this wasn't the case.

I should have been more specific...simultaneously in the Atlantic.

The reports I've read are only saying 5-10 knots. Outflow looks pretty good on all sides.

Guess I was wrong on both counts (name of second storm and year)... I meant to say:

Hurricane Hugo and Tropical Storm Iris in 1989...

The second storm never intensified into a Hurricane... but the picture was similar...

Pretty sure the ones he gave you fit that description.

    Edit: Or not!

I'm not sure if its happend before but I have to think it has.

BTW One more named storm and this September will be the most active in history.

I'm forgetting the year, but there was a time in the past 15 years when there were four named storms all swirling in the Atlantic at the same time.

Apparently its only the 2nd time in history that we've had 2 cat fours at the same time. The last time was way back in 1926.

I guess the past 10 years have dumbed me down into forgetting how rare cat fours actually are in the grand scheme of things.

Julia just set a record for the furthest East a storm has reached Cat 4 status in the Atlantic.

I wouldn't make any plans to go to Bermuda anytime soon. The outlook is not good at all.
