I don't think invading Afghanistan to kick the out of Al qaeda was a mistake. Too bad we screwed it up though and decided the taliban attacked us instead.

We didn't use our own doctrine for the first 3 years and Al Qaeda flourished.
We suddenly realized that we actually learned something from Vietnam, and switched tactics to capitalize on those lessons, and unastonishingly it worked.
